I have a Sony Vaio laptop model PCG-7M1L and it has suddenly stopped working. It will turn on and turn off (although it is taking much longer while holding down the power button) but all I am getting is a black screen. At first I was getting the blank black screen with the _ prompt. I then tried turning it off and back on again several times and now all I have is the black blank screen.
I'm a computer idiot and don't even know if I explained it the best way but if there is someone out there who can offer some assistance, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    RC

My understanding is that the OS won't boot; correct me if I've misunderstood you.

If you're using XP, try booting from an XP disc and the Repair option.

I have no clue but I will try that. Would the xp disc be part of the stuff I got when I purchased the laptop? Like I said, I'm really bad at this stuff.

    Thank you!

No, most laptops come with recovery DVDs, which aren't very useful. What you need is an XP installation CD. You don't need a license key or anything to use the Repair functionality when you boot from it.

If you are a student, you can easily get a copy of XP from your college at a greatly discounted price. If you're not a student, the next best thing would be to borrow an XP disc from a friend.
