It has been a fantastic day.

My car got broken into and my brand new Lenovo x201 got jacked and now I need a new laptop for photo processing work - again. Thinking about splurging this time and just getting the Sony.

The Lenovo, after SSD and extra 2GB RAM came out to about $1,500.

For an extra $600 in the Sony I can get the same size SSD (64GB x 2 in RAID0, but not upgradeable), a vastly better screen (Lenovo screen was HORRENDOUS), a vastly higher screen res (getting the HD option with Sony), lighter weight, longer battery life, an optical drive, and a small jump in speed with a i7 vs i5.

With a decrease in build quality and durability.

The non-upgradeable SSD bothers me a lot, but I think 128GB is a good size and I won't be needing to go up from that especially for a mobile work machine. So, are there any good deals or coupon codes out right now for a Z?

If you're in the U.S. and order from SonyStyle via phone, buy a warranty and two accessories and you can easily get 15% off the computer price. Maybe higher if you try hard and get a good rep. By all accounts it sounds like you can return the warranty within a grace period if you don't really want it.

But dude, have you had TWO computers stolen? Or just had to replace your computer twice lately? Either way, your luck may not warrant dropping over $2,000 on a Z. ;)

Two computers? No, this is my first time. My old lappy is just so old and slow so I replaced it with the Lenovo. And the Lenovo turned out to have the most horrible screen that I've ever used. And then it got stolen. And then I realized that even with some coupon codes, when an SSD is added and some extra RAM, the Lenovo's actually not that cheap compared to what you'd get with the Sony.

How does the process work with getting the 15% off? I just call, add on a warranty and two accessories, and kind of hint that I'd like a discount?

Yes, just ask if there's any discounts, and they should say they can give you 15% off, if not, just say you heard some people got 15% off... if not again, just hang up and get another rep. The rep I bought it off of seemed to have a "cheat sheet" of discounts she could give me, but yeah, try asking for more =p. And the warranty you can cancel within 30 days, I did that.

Whats the process to cancel the warranty? Just call in and say you don't need it anymore ?

After how many days you get the warranty $ credit back ?

It might be a stretch to ask this question here, but I'll do it anyways. Has anyone been able to stack the 10% student discount along with the 15% discount before?

Also, I've read that Sony's extended warranty is actually pretty bad. Is that why you and many others cancel it? Do you buy warranty from somewhere else? By the way it says on their site: "-Full refund of your Extended Service Plan within 60 days of purchase."

I highly doubt that can happen. Maybe someone has done it ?

But, Sony will give you maximum 15% discount on the notebook price if you purchase extended warranty [at least that's my experience]

Not necessarily arguing, but I wouldn't indicate you've "heard" some other people got 15% off. They might ask you for your "friend's" name and other info in order to give you the discount. I've heard of that happening. I think it's a better approach to just indicate you really like the computer and want to spend your money with Sony, but you're worried that you can't afford the laptop. Ask for something steep, like 30% off and then see what they come back with. You should get an offer for 15% easy.

I don't think it's possible to combine a student discount with any other discount. I tried and they wouldn't budge. And believe me, I pushed the envelope with these people.

I picked up a Z122GX/B from Microcenter today for $1699. I checked prices while I was in the store and I didn't see it under 1900.

Dumb question, I know there are no hardware differences between the Z11 and Z12 other than the options. Is the Z122GX a 11 or 12?

Thanks. Like I said, dumb question. I asked that because when I looked up Z122GX on Sony, it showed it as unavailable so I thought it might be a discontinued model. My first Sony computer ever, their model name convention is very difficult.

yeah, their returns work like this: just call in and they'll give you a "Sony return authorization number (RMA)" and that'll be valid for 14-days in which time you should send in your item + the RMA and they'll refund you.

But in the case of a returned warranty, they'll give you a RMA for tracking purposes and then they'll submit it into the system to get the warranty removed. I got my credit back on the next bill(they had already billed me for the lappy + warranty)

I remember reading posts from Canadians in the Official Owner's thread talking about the inability to get discounts from Sony Style Canada. I'm sure it's possible, but it sounds like it's harder based on the anecdotal evidence.

Was told by the rep yesterday that I could get 5% off with a warranty, 10% off with a warranty and 2 accessories, and 15% off with 3 accessories (no warranty needed.)
Accessories worth $25 or more each.

So I bought some camera stuff and saved $350 on my new Z!

I assume you could return the accessories too, but I got stuff I actually wanted.

good to know there is discount for getting this expensive laptop. so for the 'bundle' 15% discount with 2 accessories and warranty, can you actually return all 3 things?? and then when you returning the accessories and warranty after getting the 15% discount, do they refund you the full price for the 3 things?

it would be really great if you can return all 3 things for full price. :)

I'm all for honest authorized discounts, but it sounds to me like you're trying to game the system a little too much.
