Just purchased the Linksys E4200 network router today to replace my six year old WRT54G, I have not installed the new router yet. My neighbor has informed me that my laptop would not support 5gHz with the factory installed wireless card,(AR9287) is this true? He did mention that I could replace it with an Intel Centrino 6200 or 6300 which would handle this dual-band router up 450 Mbps.

I guess my question would be for the experts here is how hard would it be to just replace the wireless card in my laptop or should I just return the router?

I done a Google search on this without any luck so anything you guys recommend would be of great help. Thanks

It's true the Atheros card will not support 5gHz. It's also true you can replace it with an Intel Centrino 6200. This provides up to 300Mbps speed, not 450. Don't bother with the 6300 because the F only has 2 antennas. It's not difficult to replace the card - just a bit tedious with all the screws. I'll post a link here in a few minutes with directions.

Ignore the time it says it took. That was only because they were taking pictures and writing down steps and were doing it from scratch. With these directions, it should take about a half hour from start to finish, including getting the router connection up and running.
