So, I've pretty much decided to order this thing because I couldn't see myself forking over $400 extra for the G1S considering it is my first ever laptop and I don't want to spend that money on something if I will not utilize it to its capabilities. Whodduthunk?? A not-so-serious gamer buying the best 15.4'' gaming laptop available??? That's just crazy! So I decided that I'm going to get the Sony FZ and supplement it with a 22'' monitor for movie watching! Still cheaper than the G1S.

Here's what I have right now and need your help to see if I need to make any changes......

    Keyboard Black
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7300 / 2.0 GHz
    1 GB DDR-SDRAM (DDR2-667MHz, 1 GBx1)
160 GB Hard Disk Drive (Price reflects discount of $50.00)
    SuperMulti (DVD+-R Double layer / DVD+-RW Drive)
    15.4" WXGA (HC) W/CMR
    NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GT
    Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
    802.11a\b\g\n with BT
    Standard Capacity Lithium-ion Battery (BPS8)
    No Engraving
    Microsoft Works
    Music Plus
    Photo Standard
    Video Standard
    QB Basic
    Norton Internet Security 2007 (Trial)
2 Year Onsite Service Plan for Notebooks

I only selected 1 1GB stick of RAM because I'm picking up another from newegg or frys' or something to have 2 gigs. Did I pick the better screen or no? I have no idea what all the letters stand for, so need input on that. Does the computer already come with an adapter or do I need to purchase it under the accessories? It cost $90, I figured it would come with the laptop? Dumb question?

I'm looking to buy a 22'' WSXGA LCD monitor from newegg but I don't know what is a good for around $250. Any suggestions?? Also, will the FZ output at this resolution on the monitor or will it be downscaled to WXGA?? I'd like to watch at least 720p resolution movies on the monitor and maybe play some games on that.

Finally, I will not have a TV in the dorm so this laptop plus monitor will be my TV for the year. How do I make that work? What TV tuner do I need to buy to watch HDTV(local channels) and regular cable on the laptop? I heard something about Slingbox or something but I know nothing about TV tuners. Also, is there a student discount of something that I can get? I noticed something for the CR series, anything similar for this? It says estimated ship date is the 11th, I really need the notebook sooner than that? Do they offer faster shipping?

Thanks to all of you for helping make the best decision for me!

RE: the memory. I am not sure if you order it with only 1 gig if you get a SINGLE 1 gig stick or 2 512meg sticks. You should find out first! Other wise you are going to have to buy 2 new 1 gig sticks. I ordered mine with 2 gigs to start with.

There are 2 options for 1GB, and he's got the correct one which costs a little more.

Regarding the monitor, you need one with a DVI input, and an HDMI to DVI cable so that you can use the HDMI port on the laptop. Don't expect to use the VGA port because its really crappy.

Max resolution on the HDMI port is 1920 x 1080. It looks gorgeous playing BluRay movies on my 50" plasma.

For the TV, I have a Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro Stick and it works pretty well. Shop around if you intend to get that, because the prices vary greatly. And I think the laptop with a 22" monitor will a perfect dorm room TV if you add some external speakers. The FZ internal speakers are pretty week.

    LoL Rick,

Yep, I didn't notice this part:

    "1 GB DDR-SDRAM (DDR2-667MHz, 1 GBx1)"

Indeed that is a single stick.

Yes, you picked the better one (Hi-Color)
It comes with an adapter. I think they sucker a lot of people in by putting that extra adapter on the page.
This one has excellent customer reviews, and the HDCP compatibility may come in handy someday. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009094
They've been steadily beating the estimated ship dates since the FZ came out. Both of mine have been shipped within 2 days of the order date, so if you spring for the overnight shipping you'll have it within a week. Call the 800 number and ask for the student discount, as several people have reported getting a better deal by phone than was available online.

Thanks guys for the replies. I need one last question answered please. What do I do about the TV tuner? I have absolutely no experience with this and would like one that is relatively cheap but still produces HD quality playback.

    Thanks once again!

    The Pinnacle works just fine.
