    Help, the Vaio Rrefuse to boot from Hard Drive

    hi all
    i have a very good frind that have Vaio VGN-A190.
    when he open the computer he get this messege:

    "Pri Master Hard Disk:S.M.A.R.T Status BAD, Backup and Replace.
    Press F2 to Resume. "


    after pressing F2 i get the BIOS.

    i tryed to boot from the recovery disk but the VAIO did not want to boot fro it.

    i press F12...........Nothing !!!


    Please Help us. we are from out of US and here there is not Sony Support.

    Can someone help about openig the vaio and maybe to replace the hard drive to antoher.

    It looks like your hard disc is about to fail. You might be able to disable the SMART function from within the BIOS - Try it and see if you can boot. If so, then immediatly backup your data. If the disc is close to death then get a new one. If this doesn't work , you could try getting the Windows OEM kit from http://bootdisk.com/bootdisk.html and create a boot disc, and use it to back your data up. However, this won't help if your disc was formatted as NTFS.

    Another vague possibilty... (vague because I think your disc is about to fail, which is what SMART is telling you.) Possibly your Master Boot Record is corrupted. If so you can rewrite it from copies that are saved on other parts of the disc. To do this get a Win XP install CD and boot and enter the Windows XP Recovery Console. You will get a prompt. Type C: and then it will ask you for the Administor's password. Enter is and then type : fixmbr
    This will write a new master boot record. Then type exit (or quit - I cannot remember) and reboot.
