    Hi,
Recently I upgrade my SZ340 to Windows Vista, using Vaio’s Windows Vista Business Express Upgrade.
The first thing I did was the XP recovery, then run the Vista Upgrade.

After hours, the procedure has finished. I don’t have almost any trouble, beside a strange behavior with COM ports and modems.

    This is the deal:
I have the modem installed; I'm able to query the modem in advanced options from Phone and Modem in control panel. But, if I attempt configure a dial-up connection I receive the message “Windows culd not detect a dial-up modem”
Phone and Modem options show the modem on COM3.
If I open Device Manager, there isn’t a COM3!! (See attached screenshot)
The only COMs will be BT6, BT7 and BT10 to 22. A lot of COMs, but not the COM3!

So, I try delete the modem (HDAUDIO SoftV92) and redetect. Still without COM3.
At advanced options for the modem (Device Manager) I tried change from COM3 to several others. It change, but still without a correspondent COM in Ports (COM & LPT) at Device Manager.

Then I discovered that this COM insure isn’t only for the modem. I got similar problems when tried setup a dial-up connection using Bluetooth. After enter the password in computer and cellular, the Toshiba Stack flash the message “Installing a modem on COM40. Please Wait…”(also at screenshot). In a second I receive the error “Automatic modem installation failed. Plese set up again.” Of course, I can try but the error will occur again.

Then I checked Phone and Modem options again. For EVERY attempt of configure GPRS connection in Bluetooth Stack will be a “standar” modem in COM40, like:
    Standard 33600bps Modem COM40
    Standard 33600bps Modem #2 COM40
    Standard 33600bps Modem #3 COM40
    Standard 33600bps Modem #4 COM40
    (screenshot)

Guess what? There isn’t a COM40 in Device Manager’s COM in Ports (COM & LPT).

The next step wass try removing the Toshiba’s BT Stack. Didn’t solve the problem. After remove, there isn’t any COM port in Device Manager: COM in Ports (COM & LPT) simple disappear. I still unable to use my cellular as modem with Microsoft BT stack and unable to configure a Dial-up with standard modem (HDAUDIO SoftV92).

Anybody got this problem after the express upgrade?

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Regards.

    Hi fellows,

Last night I started the procedure again, reinstalling Vista (with took a long time, since I must recover XP first, and then upgrade to Vista).

After finish the Vista upgrade, the first action after the message “your system is upgraded”, I tried configure a new dial-up, with was made without problems: I was able to configure a dial-up using internal modem or Toshiba’s BT Stack (GPRS).

Then I start removing unnecessary software, and after each software removed I restart the system, delete the dial-up and configure it again.
With this procedure I discovered the problem: SmartWiFi. After remove this software the problem is back!!!
Install SmartWiFi again doesn’t help. After remove this garbage (form me is garbage, since I don't have Cingular on my notebook) for the first time, modems are “invisible” to Vista’s dial-up configure!
My sugestion is: if you have SmartWiFi instaled, don't remove ;)

    Regards.
