    Hey guys,

I am a incoming freshmen, and have started looking tediously looking for a nice laptop and stumbled upon the FW 490.

I am hoping that a few of the owners might be generous enough to point me either towards or away from this laptop.

How are your experinces with it over all? gaming? Heat and noise? etc.
What about the quality of the Sony Warranty?

Any reply would be much appreciated!

    Thanks for you time!

A generation ago, the question (college or high school) wasn't applicable! ;-)

Seriously, go to the FW owners thread and the other threads on NBR where the FW series is discussed (gaming performance, etc.). So far, lots of kudos out there....

I have an FW and I do not recommend it (see my posts in the FW owners thread etc.). Go with a Macbook Pro if you can and install Windows on it if you need.

And, again, check the many threads on the FW for comparisons with the MBP. "Ornery" has some pretty scary things to say about the Apple power bricks, for example.

Indeed, after seeing that post, I cannot comprehend why you'd pay 2 grand for a laptop. Either way, like Derrida said, there are plenty of posts and people giving their impressions of the FW. And since the FW4xxx just came out, you don't have to go through all the older posts that apply only to FW1xx to 3xx, though you should check some of them out to see how the FW is holding up after a year of use.

If you can find a better bang for the buck notebook, PLEASE post it back to this thread. It'll play Blue-ray as well as the free upgrade to Windows 7. For 1/2 the price of an MBP, and several hundred less than most other similarly configured PC's, I'll be darned if I can find a better deal.

BTW, my PowerBook G4 has trouble keeping the power supply cord plugged in. It doesn't seem to snap in deep enough. One slight bump, and it's no longer making contact, even though it's plugged in. Next thing I know, I've been running off the battery for an hour. It's a quality built machine, but certainly not worth what I had to pay for it. Don't even get me start on the poor Wi-Fi reception.

    BTW2, here's a clue how flippin' cheap I am...
