Whenever I put a disc in my drive the CPU usage jumps from idle to 40%. I checked Task Manager and it seems that both System and System interrupts are what increased as soon as the disc goes in.
I have tried both DVD movies and data discs and the same situation occurs.
I don't think this is normal as when I place the same discs in my wifes Toshiba notebook, the CPU rests at idle.
Does this happen to anyone else with a S13 or S15?

Update: This problem still occurs even after a clean install of Windows 8 and also occurs when running Ubuntu 13.04. I made a video showing my problem.
Issue with DVD drive on Sony Vaio S13 - YouTube
I would like to know If this happens to anyone else with a 2012 Vaio S13 to know if this is normal or if I need to contact Sony support. -
Seems like the drive is not using the proper DMA mode. Check in device manager> disk controller properties. If this were only in Windows, uninstalling and reinstalling the disk controller usually fixes the problem, but if it is the same in Ubuntu, it might be a BIOS setting that's wonky. See if restoring BIOS defaults fixes the problem.

I tried resetting the BIOS to default settings, uninstalling and reinstalling the chipset drivers and the problem still occurs.
I will have to contact Sony support as I cannot use my DVD drive while on battery as the high CPU use will kill my battery life. -
I had the same problem - I was wondering why my S15, with 2 full batteries (main+sheet), could not sit for 2 hours
Turns out using the CD killed it soooo fast, even a gaming session lasts more
I wonder if folks have the similar issues with an SSD or HDD in the optical bay? Or is it just a very crappy optical? -
Does it drain your battery even if you just leave the disc in your drive and not actively accessing it? For me, even if I leave my computer alone for an hour, the CPU use stays high the entire time. With turbo boost kicking in, the exhaust from the fan gets very hot.
I spoke to Sony support and they think it is a hardware issue so they are sending me a prepaid box to ship it to a repair center to get it checked out. -
what was broken? what did the sony support say after they checked your notebook? i have the exkat same problem like you with my sony vaio s13 laptop
-
They said it was normal and not to leave a disc in the drive when not needed.
Do you have a blu-ray drive or only dvdrw?

i have the blu-ray drive. i have noticed that if i turn the stamina-mode on the CPU usage goes normal again...sony notebooks have bad quality=(
-
Same here. Blu ray drive and stamina mode helps a bit.
I was mad when they told me it was normal. Sony support stinks.

I have the same problem with my SVS13. The problem is worst because I've installed a ssd in the optical drive bay and the high use of the CPU is continuous. In stamina-mode it's better, but the problem is still there.
Could you finally find a solution? -
I was never able to fix the problem. I too noticed that running in stamina mode reduces the CPU load by half but it is still using ~15-20%.
If you swap out the optical disc for a hard drive, you will need to get a modified caddy that will fix this issue which is common to most if not all Windows 8 models of the SVS. -
I have a Sony SVS-15 with the exact same symptoms. I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what the problem is to no avail. If you open up performance monitor you'll see the drive uses almost 100% of CPU-0 when there is any kind of disc in the drive - even a blank.. Now that Sony sold off their PC division it's likely never to get fixed. There is no way this is normal by any stretch of the imagination. Well - I guess it is "normal" that it's broken!

I thought that too and then did a little digging and found that PIO/DMA only applies to IDE controllers. These are SATA controllers which are only capable of DMA access.
High CPU usage when optical disc is in drive
