I have a Sony Vaio VGN CR32W. What I thought first hearing this high pitched buzzing was that my hdd was broken. I got a new HDD from Sony but the buzzing is still there.

This high pitched buzzing is not constant, it comes and goes. It seems its more obvious the more programs are running, or the more tabs I have opened in Firefox.

The buzzing comes from the right side of my laptop, if im right the hdd sound comes more from the left side.

My right speaker was broken once too. So I got this replaced too.Can it be that my Right Speaker is somehow influenced from the HDD working operations? Since my right speaker was broken once and being replaced...?

This high picthed buzzing, not too loud but noticeable comes from the very right of my Vaio...

Good question - I can tell you that speakers are easily influenced.
For example in a speaker (TV) or headphone (even better) you can clearly hear textmessages that are sent or that arrive.
So your HDD could influence your speaker.

On the other hand - an HDD makes a high pitched noise when it "spins up" i.e accelerates. Could it be that?

Your right! Speakers can be influences easily, but then why do i hear it a lot more on the right side?

I pretty much know the HDD is on the left side since underneath the right speaker there is my DVD Drive.

I was thinking it could be a fan underneath but theres no space either.

I doubt its the noise when a HDD "spins up" as Im also able to hear it by just having Firefox running with 4 tabs, Skype and Pidgin.

Theres not much writing or working happening...

The weird thing is that closing Firefox makes the sound disappear, starting it and I hear it again.

Maybe there is an incompatebility between you Audio drivers and Firefox?
There are some weird problems around.
For example, on the NVidia Graphics card on my SZ, 4 or 5 pixels in the top left hand corner "act broken" when ICQ is open.
No why this occurs I don't know, but its one of those strange things...
    Maybe update friefox??
Another high pitched sound I can think of - bluetooth...

Also, its not just happening with Firefox, it also happens with IE and all other programs. Like I said its not a loud loud buzzing but its recognizeable, more on the right then left....

Im confused I didnt hear this before....

When i close the application having a plain windows desktop then there's no buzzing anymore.

Im not sure but i kinda hear something on the right the whole time... it doesnt sound like a fan at all.. and because the DVD drive is underneath that speaker i doubt theres a fan.

If you activate a bluetooth device it will give of a high pitched humming sound during transmision or "connection seeking".

Its not that I deactivated Bluetooth.

    Read this:

When i close the application (firefox, itunes, internet explorer, acdsee) having a plain windows desktop then there's no buzzing anymore.

Im not sure but i kinda hear something on the right the whole time... it doesnt sound like a fan at all.. and because the DVD drive is underneath that speaker i doubt theres a fan.
