I am thinking of upgrading my FS series with a 7200RPM HDD, which of the above two are better in terms of performance, noise and battery usage.

I have two Seagate 7200.1s - one in my Sharp, one in the Sony. They're great. I had the 1st gen 7k100 60GB, and that was nice, but I like my Seagate as it's a tad quieter and honestly, I really see not much if any speed difference. With the SZ, since the HD is right under the metal under the left palm rest, cooler is better.

My computer is on a lot and it hasn't gotten hot at all.

    Just my $.02.

I am curious, when upgrading to a 7200 RPM disk would you expect it to reduce the battery life? I would think it would take more power to get the faster rotation.

The ATA 7200rpm by Hitachi claimed it doesn't decrease battery life. When I used it I didn't notice any considerable (if any) decrease in the battery life.

I'm thinking about upgrading to a 7200rpm drive. Two questions though, firstly is there really a noticeable difference in speed, not just one that will show in benchmarks but also in daily life (booting Windows, copying files, etc.)
Secondly am I wrong or does it void the warranty to swap the hard drive?

    Thanks.

Yes there is a noticeable difference. My last notebook had a 7200rpm drive. Now going to the SZ's 5400rpm. It just feels really slow. 7200rpm hdd is def my top priority as far as my notebook goes.

I just wish there was a really good guide with pictures. Or even better a vidoe tutorial. I hope it doesn't come down to me making one.

Bomfunk - if you're doing any real work (video, virtual machines, etc.), you do notice the difference. More memory helps too as it all works together ...
