    Hey guys,

I just reformatted my Sony laptop that crashed a while ago by a virus and since the recovery disks don't seem to be working, I'm going to reinstall Windows XP Home, which was the same version that was installed before, by a genuine cd which my friend gave me. I don't, however, want to use his CD key, since I want to have a genuine version of Windows XP as I did before.

Is it possible to reuse the same CD key which is on the bottom of my laptop with the standard Windows XP Home CD or will I have to buy a OEM version of the Windows XP Home CD.

Also related to the situation, does Sony ship its laptops with an OEM version of Windows XP Home preinstalled or just the standard consumer version of Windows XP Home?

    Thanks :)

It is unlikely to work with the key on your notebook, but should work with the CD key. Microsoft should activate it for you as long as you have a valid COA, but you might want to ask before trying it.
