I have a 2 year old Z11 that's been getting hotter and hotter. I used to be able to use it on my lap but know that just leaves my legs red even through jeans. I'm using two magazines under it right now and it's still warm. The thing is, the fan isn't running that hard. I know it can since when I max the CPU it cranks. Is there a way to control the fan speed?

Install the hacked bios (there's an active thread on that). I think you can control fan behavior from there.

Open Vaio Control Center and you can tell the fan to speed up a little bit via: Power Management-> Power Options-> Thermal Control Strategy.

The tip namaiki said above is the easiest quick-fix; working really well for me - I had the same problem.
Have you cleaned the fan and vents? When the fan is running full blast, hold your hand in front of the place where the air blows out. You should be able to feel the hot air blowing out on your hand from at least six inches away. If not, then a good cleaning is in order. Careful with the fan blades, though - they seem to break rather easily. -
Thanks guys. I'm on "performance" thermal startegy now. Hope it helps. I regularly suck out the vents with the vacuum cleaner. It's about time for another hinge tightening so I might take the op to clean it.
Hot running Z11, can I increase fan speed?
