On the VPCF1390X CTO with the Full HD Premium display (1920x1080), I have read various comments here that the screen needs to be "calibrated" before you use it.

    1. Is this correct? If so, why does Sony sell computers that are not ready to use out of the box?

    2. If this is correct, are there step-by-step instructions available on how to do this? Is separate software needed?

(Mods, if this question has already been asked and answered, I am sorry I could not find it. In that case, please point me to the right place and delete the thread.)

You can find profiles and a link for instructions here: Vaio-F Series Monitor Calibration and Users Created Profiles Roundup
There are also a couple more profiles if you search (use google, not the forum search) the F series owners lounge part 5 thread.

Edit: If you don't mind spending some money, you will get the best results if you buy a calibration kit, like Spyder3Express, and calibrate your own monitor, but you can use the above link to go the free route.

And to answer your first question, it is ready to use out of the box. However, it's not very pleasant to use (view) for most people so we calibrate it.
