You know how refrigerators make a noise constantly, or air conditioners? Let me ask you about your FE. Is your FE always making a sound when ON? I'm not talking about the fan. My FE used to be completely silent except for the fan occasionally turning on. Now there is a noise coming out of my FE the moment I press the ON button. It's driving me nuts. Its not too loud but you can definitly hear it without placing your ear on the keyboard. Is your FE completly silent when the fan is not on? Thanks in advance.

i can hear it at a normal distance, i dont have to get close or listen for it. Is the hard drive supposed to spin all the time?

My SZ makes a noise that I'm trying to track down that is related to the LCD screen ----- I have read about a similar noise happening to the FE models.

When my computer is on AC power and on Max Brightness, it runs quiet.

When the computer is on AC power and on anything other than Max Brightness, it emits a hum/whine/buzz that I can hear without putting my ear to the keyboard. When the computer is on battery power, I can always hear this whine/buzz. If I switch the LCD off, the whine disappears.

I have no idea how to fix this problem, and I have heard of people with FEs having the same issue ---- I don't know if this sounds familiar to you, or if anyone has any ideas/solutions?

I dont think mine is emitting the noise from the screen. However I do have the same buzz you hear (when i put it to standby). I have decided to live with it. The nosie i am talking about comes from inside the computer under the keyboard somewhere. I am starting to think maybe its the fan working on low all the time, but is that normal? It starts the moment I boot it!

Not much help here huh :) Well I am still debating about my issue (with myself haha)...Now I am leaning towards the possibility that the noise I hear is my hard drive spinning. It definitly got louder because it used to be so silent. I realized this because my external hard drive makes the same noise but a lot softer. Is this a matter to be concerned with? Anybody else with an FE with a loud hard drive spinning?

My FE is a very quiet machine, no matter the brightness settings, or running on battery, or AC plugged in.

The noise I referred to doesn't come from the LCD, but is linked to it somehow ---- it also comes from the front-keyboard region. It's better than a similar noise my FJ270/b made, but is still kinda lame. Not sure what I'm going to do about it yet (I've already sent my current lappy in to get its keyboard re-mounted, and am not really hip to the idea of sending it back again --- I'm going to talk to a tech later today and see if I can get any insight regarding this).

I know a few Toshiba's that tend to whine around the screen area.

The tech people say thats pretty normal.

Its still really annoying to hear that though.

mine isnt a whining but more like a loud spinning, its not a high pitch noise. i did a sony hardware diagnostic of it and all came ok. is there any way to turn off your hd drive withouth turning out the computer? that way i can check if its indeed the hard drive. i tried to do this through the power options (turn off hard disk after 3 mins) but nothing happened....

There is actually. Do you have Notebook Hardware Control instaled? It's a great little program for notebooks anyway so highly recommended here: www.pbus-167.com

Open the roster "Hard disk" then under "advanced power managment" change to "enable spin down" You're harddrive should shut off when not in use. You'll hear it spinning up again pretty soon because of Windows accessing it.
