    Hello,

today I received new memory and right away decided to do easy task, install it to my VGN-TX51B/B.

It looked easy just until I opened the memory cover and found out there is some kid of mechanism, which I don't know. Nevermind, just slide it there and lightly pressed and it was there, even though not in the way I expected (see red circles)

Turned on, checked in My Computer...and surprise, there's written just 504 MB of RAM. Quick check in SIW and it looks like it's installed properly...

So restart and checking BIOS...really just 512 MB of RAM recognized...does anyone know why? What should I do please?

Doesn't look like it is all the way in the slot, try pushing it downward more(downward being from the point of view of the picture) IE slide it further into the slot.

Believe me I was trying quite hard...and I decided to stop and ask people here, because I thought it's just because I didn't get, how the mechanism is working. It doesn't look like it's possible to put it more inside of the slot jut by sliding :)

the pins on either side are push left / push right and the memory 'POPS' outwards at a 45 degree angle.

you put the memory in at a 45 degree angle into the slot and push it downwards until the two metal pin things on either side click above the memory stick

it looks to me like you tried to slide it almost horizontally ? as when you insert it in at 45 degrees, all of the gold pins should be covered almost completely.

    heres a example picture

This happened to me too with a 2gb pc2-5300 which i bought recently off ebay for $15. I thought it was faulty, but actually, the coating on the contacts is still intact, so it's not reading it. What you have to do is put it in and take out out a couple of times.

Same thing happened with a videocard I had a while ago, put it in and took it out a couple of times and it worked.

Let me know if that helps

    What happened?
If you don't have experience of upgrading i would let a professional do your upgrading for you.
Sony packs everything so tight inside these laptops that it can be hard to put everything together again as it was.

More likely it looked like there was something stuck in a slot...I used compressed air to clean it well all around and after that it could fit easily.

I don't have any experience with upgrading laptops (besides my beautiful IBM P90 many many years ago), but I'm comfortable enough to build desktops and repair monitors.

How differently get experience that try it on this old notebook :) I'm making picture every few steps what I've done to be able to put it back together correctly. It's great to have these tools to be able to open it without scratching :)

This is interesting. I have a TXN25 and like it a lot, but it's a little too slow.

It currently has 1.5GB of memory. How high can it go with XP? And what memory should I buy?

    Thanks

I believe up to 2GB...I have 2,5 GB installed now (with the 512MB integated one) and 2GB are recognized in WinXP. But I don't think more RAM would help you with speed. SSD would, but is another question.

Thanks. I'm shopping for a fast/reliable SSD, and will also add RAM. Hopefully this lovely little laptop has another year or two left in it.
