I have been in to bios and set "Boot from external device" as top of the boot order - but the machine still ignores the external diskette drive

...I am trying to back up the MBR to diskette

does the "diskette" have an operating system (e.g. DOS) on it?

in bios there's 2 things you have to do. 1 is to put external device at top of boot order. the other is you need to enable booting from external device. it's in the same page in the bios.

    Options were set to

    External Device Boot [Enabled]
    1st Boot Priority [External Device]

..and still no boot from USB

But I tried again this morning after checking the boot options and it now it is working - It looks like it may need a cold start for the changes to take effect ie a hard power off rather than a warm power on restart....

    Thanks for your help..
