It seems like these new Windows 8 laptops have some weird way of accessing the BIOS, I tried F1 - F12, DEL, ESC, nothing works. Any ideas?

Make sure the unit is off, press the assist button. This gets you to the boot/UEFI selection menu. These new UEFI's boot much faster compared to old BIOS so pressing F2 in time is not possible anymore :p

Thanks Sick Nick! Now I just need to figure out how to get the secondary functions like brightness to work in Windows 7.

Are you installing Windows 7 on a Windows 8 laptop? Why would you want to do that? Except for the start menu (or lack thereof - and there are ways to minimise the pain), I don't see any problem with Windows 8. Try Win+X (there is even an editor that lets you put whatever you want in that menu).

Yes. This is for a client of mine. The accounting software he's running does not support Windows 8 nor will his tech support support Windows 8. Now the brightness does not work and I can't get the video drivers to install. This believe the new laptops use hybrid video and this Sony is using AMD 7650M with i7 3632QM.

I'm aware of the program you mentioned and programs like ClassicShell and Start8. I personally been a user of ClassicShell for a long time (love classic XP start menu).

Did you try the compatibility troubleshooter? I was rather impressed by it. Instead of trying recommended settings, troubleshoot program based on your observations.

I don't believe the drivers are backwards compatible. You will have to look for Windows 7 drivers for your hardware if you have to downgrade.

You still can go to bios by pressing F2.
However, it is a bit different from previous model. You have to press and HOLD.

0pTicaL - How is this project going? I'm about to attempt the same thing (well, attempt AGAIN, as my first attempt failed, thanks to Insyde h2o "protecting" me from doing what I want) and would appreciate knowing the steps you took to give 7 installed and whether you've found compatible drivers for everything.

For some reason Sony doesn't allow AMD to provide driver updates for their systems, but AFAIK DOES allow Nvidia to provide them...which is weird, but...

I'd be surprised if there's much of anything that runs in Vista or 7 that doesn't run in 8 since all three are basically the same OS. Most anything from earlier SHOULD run too though some stuff was poorly coded and will run in XP but not higher because it wasn't coded right...that's pretty rare though.

I know this reply is almost half a year old but Sony's website now offers Windows 7 x64 drivers for this model and their newer SVE171390X model as well.
