Which service/startup item controls VAIO Power Management?
The tab disappeared completely from my "Power Options."

Nuntius,
If a tab goes missing, it's probably the program that has been corrupted in some way? (Missing registry or something...)
Have you tried re-installing the power management software? -
I haven't seen this mentioned, but Sony had a recent power managment update that removed that tab (at least for the TX series). I had to do a XP's system restore to recover the previous version. I suppose you could since VAIO restore, as well.
I wonder if Sony removed these options so that the fans would run on maximum to reduce heat in light of the recent laptop fire news, although those are battery related. -
Hi CAlBenzo,
I do not think Sony would have done something like that for the battery issues.
But I think what you've said is probably the reason why Nuntius lost his tab.
Perhaps he could furnish us with more information after reinstalling the power management. -
If you have installed Sony's "power management update" which disables their power management utility so that you can fully discharge your battery, you have to run the update again to re-enable VAIO power management. I have a FE590 and the corresponding update is here http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNFE590&upd_id=2148&os_id=7
The uninstall directions:
Re-Enable Power Management
1. Power on the notebook computer.
2. After the computer starts completely, go to the directory where SOAOTH-01192100-US.EXE was downloaded and double-click the SOAOTH-01192100-US.EXE file.
3. At the "Sony® Power Management Settings Utility for Microsoft® Windows® XP" screen, click "Next".
4. At the "License Agreement" dialog, click "I Agree" to continue with the installation.
NOTE: Several setup boxes may briefly appear during the installation. As the files are installed, these boxes will close automatically.
5. At the "Power Management Control Setup" screen, select "Restore the Original Setting of Power Management" and then click "Next".
6. At the "Power Management Control Setup Complete" screen, click "Finish". -
Interesting since the one for the TX is different, and mentions that the issue resolved relates to the LCD power saving function, as opposed to a discharge problem. Different models of course, but I know this update removed my VAIO power management tab.

Bumping for posterity...
I still haven't solved my problem.
I like whttan's recommendation, to reinstall the Sony Power Management Driver/Software,
however, it seems that I cannot find it on the Sony esupport site. -
It is very very easy to find. www.sony.com
Or just go here. http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/select-system.pl
type your model # like SZ*** or FE*** -
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNSZ250P&UpdateType=Original
Easy to find, you say?
If it were easy to find, I would have found it long ago, I assure you. -
Well, at www.sony.com, you need just one click to go to the support page, Isn't it easy? It takes 3 seconds.
Or at www.google.com, just type "sony support," and search. Then you will see direct link to Sony support homepage. Isn' it easy? It takes ONE second. -
Listen, I'm not dense, like some people are.
How thick do you have to be to not understand what I've put forth?
I provided you with a direct link to my model and its drivers and software.
Now, you tell me, where in that list does it say "Power Management?"
I ask you, pray tell, so that you may not set me out to be as if I were a fool,
when, in reality, you are the one who is truly being foolish by not even making the effort to read what I have written.
My apologies, most posts cannot be read in one second, and most problems cannot be solved in a matter of seconds. -
Try it this way if you can.

Thank you for your efforts, Duckfart, but that didn't work either.
-
Here is the utility, although I didn't upload this so check this before installing (of course I would think you would do that anyway since it is just good practise).
-
This is what I mean.
Please observe that the tab is missing in the Power Options Properties window. -
Not sure if you got the program to reinstall, but if you didn't her you go.
scroll down and download the power management.

Duckfart, I tried re-installing the driver using VAIO Support Central, but that didn't do the trick...
And, the link you gave me features dead links... above that, it's only for Asian-Pacific models
Well, thanks anyway ;_;
I would purchase the professional version of NHC, but I really don't feel safe setting up a paypal account. -
The link dies frequently(why, I don't know)but I have downloaded and saved on disk, if you want let me know and I can up load it to yousendit and you can try it. -
OK, I just tested the software and it is same as US version.
No guarantee this will solve your problem , but you will have the program to reinstall.
For some reason the Asia sites gives you all the drivers and software not like the US. I have downloaded all of the drivers and software from the asia site and backed it up. -
*overwhelmed by happiness*
Duckfart, I solved my problem
I've been trying to "repair" Power Management all along.
So, I decided, this time, to uninstall/reinstall it, and... VIOLA, GREAT SUCCESS!
Thanks for your time and efforts -
First of all, big "thank you" to all in the forum, I tried to install a internet cafe type software for evaluation (doesnt really matter boring boring) but anyway the shareware somehow bombed out my power settings on my vaio tx3. Basically i was at minimum screen illumination and no way of changing things
The definitive answer is
a) Go to the correct SONY page for your product in your region. Its no good trying to use a US models software for Europe or vice versa (dont know why but it is like this!!)
b) The power management facilities CAN be restored WITHOUT a full restore (which destroys data). The option is hidden away in what Sony calls the "Utilities package", mine was TX3_Utilities I guess its easy to work out the correct name.
Thats it, so I went from total disaster (and near blindness) thanks to all the previous posters and some extra legwork.
Not an expert but all this worked for me!
cheers
Steve
