I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this, are they functional or not? How do they work exactly with or without a DVD player?

Normally ot work with a media device like Dvd or CD . Av mode is made for an easy access on your video or audio players just one push of a button and the player will appear you can change the default setting of the Av mode by going to Vaio Central - System information Tab - Special buttons - Look for Av MOde- !!!!

    Hope This ONe helps!!!! :) :) :)

They will work in the OS, but you cannot launch AV-Mode (eg, view dvd movies,
play MP3s, view photos, etc without booting up the OS. Similar to HP's Quickplay, Dell's MediaDirect, etc.

And Sony has turned the "Eject" button into a special function key, so you can program it do whatever you like via a control panel. :)

hmm.. I think he meant, he has Non-ODD version and he wanted to use the AV function button? this is where Im having problems, too. I have no-ODD version and I want the AV buttons to work as part of short-cuts, etc.

But somehow I can not find AV utilities under Sony Control, I guess they purposely did not include..
