With a glossy screen, so long as you don't use anything capable of scratching the surface, you're good. Spray on some glasses cleaner and wipe with a glasses cloth when it's turned off, and you're good.

But how do you effectively clean a matte screen without damaging the matte surface? What should I be using, and what should I stay away from?

    Thanks!

I'm not sure if this is the best answer, but I went to a Target and bought a screen cleaning solution that is supposedly designed for HDTVs and computer displays. It seems to have worked out fine, I don't notice any type of damage from using it.

Buy KLEAR, yes K-L-E-A-R. You can buy it in Frys or bestbuy probably. It works!

^ i think it's called iKLEAR (Apple-style naming, don't ask me). i've used it to clean my sister's VAIO Z's matte screen, and it worked beautifully and removed all the marks and residues.

Basically any screen cleaner for computer screens/LCDs. Just don't use windex or anything intended for glass. You don't need iKlear or any overpriced, branded cleaner - cheap, generic 'LCD wipes' work perfectly.

This never used to be an issue...until the (relative) fall of the matte screen and the rise of the glossy, super-reflective Gorilla glass nonsense.

Windex and soft cotton cloth having laptop powered down of course. Works for years, no scratches any sort on any of my Lenovo and recently VAIO laptops.

A damp eCloth - no cleaning liquids required and eCloths don't leave streaks. Works perfectly, every time. I should know - I have LCD OCD!

PS: Microsoft, you can shove Windows 8 and it's touch interface - I'm never putting fingerprints on my laptop screen!!

An alcohol and ammonia free lens cleaner from your local optometrist- $3.00. Clean with a microfiber cloth- $2.00.
