i have the sz691 for bout past 3 weeks and wow! i am startled. it's the greatest thing i cud have ever purchased. i jus love it. great lcd, carbon-fiber casing, dual graphics , gr8 battery life, unbetable screen, 1.8kgs!, beautiful hand-crafted lid which is simply un-resistable, you start to like it more and more until the thought washes away that you have spen 350$+ for it. LOLZ.
still I LOVE IT

My two week old VGN-SZ660N/C is great... perhaps the best laptop I've owned.
Build is much better than Dell... minimal plastic. The brushed aluminum and all black finish is cool.
About the only thing missing is some form of direct media controls so you don't have to boot into the OS to watch a DVD. It would be cool to have 2 drives or an ssd and hdd.
Yes tons o' bloatware but there are a few tutorials here to take care of that... replacing the 5400rpm with the Hitachi 200GB, 7200rpm (external drive deal) with the DTE/DTG serial number as mentioned in other posts and the SZ really smokes.
On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd say this is a solid 8 (and the Dell M1330 would be a 6.5).
Good luck and happy computing! -
691nx here, and its a great machine, very snappy even with a Ultimate upgrade. I do have the 7200rpm drive in it now, so that might be part of the performance boost. Iagree with others, the screen res could be a tad higher, but the screen is a beaut.
Bat life is great with the integrated card.
Biggest negative i the keyboard quality. Im coming from a Thinkpad, so this is a bit unfair, but the sony should be muich better considering the $2800 price tag -
can some of you guys with the 691 post pictures of the lid? thanks

here u go, not a good pic at night wth flash on. the lid looks diff in various lighting conditions

i bought a SZ440 few weeks ago. i didn't really like it that much. I purchased it looking for light weight and long battery life. I did get both. However, where i wasn't really satisfied was in the fan noise and the over all build. It didn't really seem very solid and the fan was on all the time. Additionally i didn't really like the screen or the performance of the video card. Probably because i so used to a 15.4" screen. Anyways and i used it for a two weeks and returned it. Still using my FE.

My two day old sz650n/c is great, no yallow band and no fan noise.
I love it , I have not found any cons so far. I also like vista, it is interesting.
After working with it for sevral hours, now I think xp is boring. I won't change th os.
I would buy it again. -
Roor, someone else asked for this a short while back and I created a thread with some nice pictures:

I am using the SZ58GN/C. I'm quite happy with it. The only thing I am concern right now is, I did downgrade it to XP. I did not delete the recovery partition. I just don't know how to reset it to factory setting. Since I did not make any backup disc from the vista. I can't find the download support tools like VAIO Data Restore Tool, VAIO Recovery Center anywhere.
Any help would be appreciate!
Thanks. -
SZ460N/C
Likes: Weight, LED screen, ability to switch GPUs, looks.
Dislikes: Relatively hot (hotter than SZ140 CTO), fan always on and really kind of loud for todays standards, Sloooow startup and shutdown even after most bloatware removal, small size good but hard to read text sometimes (and I read a lot of notes and presentations on mine), keyboard and touchpad mark screen (no scratches, yet), semi loose battery, limited video out, 2 USB ports, and lastly EXPENSIVE (paid $2300 retail Feb 2007).
meh (no real opinion): battery life, GPU performance, thinness, screen size, overall speed.
Epilogue: I upgraded to FZ4000 and it is a much better system than the SZ460, although a lot heavier.
How happy are you with your Sony SZ?
