Hi, I'm planning on purchasing a new laptop next month and have narrowed it down to the Vaio S13 and the Sager NP6110. I am leaning towards the Vaio as I love the design and size even though the video card is weaker.
The important thing I am curious about is how hot the Vaio runs while gaming. The configuration I would be getting is with the i7-3520M. Would it be able to handle demanding games or emulators(Dolphin, Pcsx2) using thottlestop set to higher clock frequencies? My current laptop(timelinex-4830tg) reaches cpu temps in the 90ºs+ when I set the processor to above 2.5ghz. I would like to avoid questionable temps in my next laptop.
I've done my research on the NP6110 and found the temperatures to be manageable under these conditions but couldn't find anything on the S13.
Thanks![]()

Well, i'm not really playing games on mine but i'm doing a lot of rendering on 3ds Max and the temperature reaches about 85º during the rendering process with the cpu maxed out at 100% during the whole time. Maximum i got was 88º. other than that, it's averaging at 55º even when i watch so flash video, while my i5 z11 watching the same video would go at 90º

The hottest I've seen my S13P hit was around 70C, but I have the i5-3210 model, not the i7 (which is not worth it imo) and the GPU is overclocked to 900mhz.

i7 model.
The good - No throttling; Efficient enough itself to keep cool; average temperature while playing ~70, max ~80; keyboard becomes warm only at the top (Near F7, F8)
The bad - Laptop coolers don't seem to lower the temps at all. Screen is blocking the vents.
The ugly - NOISY AS HELL; not turning fan off if temp is below 40 = waste of battery when unplugged = noob sony
Bear in mind windows 8 model doesn't have OC ability on GPU yet.
Edit: It might not be noisy for other people but i come from laptop that was in total silence if idle. -
Thanks for all the responses, it seems it runs fairly cool compared to my current sandy bridge lappy. : ]
I can live without the GPU OC though I am curious if/when the modded bios will be released for the W8 version? -
Mine has never exceeded 75 degrees C (i5 3320M). IMHO the upgrade to the i7 isn't worth the money or the increase in temperature. If it were the 3612QM then I would have been all over it.

my i7 runs at 74-76°C while constantly using turbo boost, with gpu turned off.
I'm not sure about emulators, which require a lot of cpu power, but if you stress the gpu (especially when it's overclocked), you may be forced to disable turbo boost depending on your ambient temp as well as how your unit behaves. -
I have the S13P (i5 version) running the 900/900 GPU mod.
On full load with gaming, CPU hovers around 70-75c and the GPU around 65-70.
I do echo the other sentiments that it's extremely loud under full load (w/ bios mod and priority to ventilation). It is near-silent on stamina mode, although it does run relatively hot on idle (55-60 cpu). -

I did little experiment while on idle.
First with cooling on Silence, it was ~50 and little noise.
Then i put cooling on Performance it was still ~50 but alot more noise.
Obviously something is off with the fan. Has anyone tried replacing the fan? i'm suspecting Sony put crappy/cheap one inside, Cause my other laptop had exact same looking fan that was near silent when spinning.
How hot does the S13/S13P run
