So I'm thinking of getting the CTO Vaio SB and I was just concerned about what I've been reading about its noise in some of the reviews. So is does this still make a fair amount of sound even while you're performing the most basic tasks such as like Word? Am I going to sit down at my desk at school and have people beside me easily be able to hear it?

Depends on which model you're getting. If you're getting the one with the 7200rpm, it's crazy under moderate-heavy load. I suppose the SSD version is much quieter because of the silent operation of the drive, but the 7200rpm gets moderately loud when doing simple tasks like web browsing and MS word, and very annoyingly loud when gaming.

The SB can get loud if there is a heavy cpu load. When windows does its 'background' activities it can get a bit noisy.
Overall though, just web browsing and word will not make it spin up and it is relatively quiet.
