the last SZ i had - i kept it for close to 4 years and sold it for good price (almost 20% of my purchase price).

Any advice on when would be a good time to sell if resale value is important to you?

    Thanks in advance.

I don't own a Z, but a FW, but it being my first laptop, I won't sell it, even if or when I get a new one (probably SB), I won't sell that either. I like collecting gadgets and as laptops go, they are a pretty nice gadget :p

This question can be applied to all the Vaio owners. But yeah, I don't have a Z (it wasn't available yet in Canada when I needed to buy a laptop though it was announced).

I also have a FW. My first laptop, the Toshiba listed in my signature lasted me for 5 years (though the 5th year, I was fighting to keep it alive). The FW, I'm in my 3rd year of ownership and it's running fine (knock on wood). Next year, I'm going to open it up and apply some thermal paste to make it cooler and hopefully extend its life.

I don't usually have an exact time frame for keeping laptops. As long as the OS runs smoothly, I can do my work without problems, and the laptop runs, I don't have plans to buy another one.

I would say maybe 3 years...if it has a good resale value by then I'd sell it, if not, I'd keep it. I still have my Toshiba Satellite 2180CDT from 1998...it was my dad's and he gave it to me a few years ago. Still runs great, even the 4gb hard drive is in tact.

I don't have a VPC-Z series notebook but I still have a VGN-Z690 notebook. I'm looking to sell that ASAP if I can even find a buyer for it. :( It is in like-new condition. I'm just looking to sell it to help fund my purchase of a new 2011 17" MBP. :)

I only got my latest Z last year, no plans to replace it anytime soon because there's nothing better available. It's still #1.

I keep my eyes on Craigslist everyday for any good deals on Vaios. After scanning the past few months for computers, it seems like various Z (Z12 and Z13) are being offered for ~$600 below MSRP. These computers certainly depreciate a lot more than Apple computers. I have no clue how my friend does this, but he buys a new mac, uses it for a few months, then sells it for MORE than he bought it.

But back to the original question, I plan on keeping this as my main computer through college (so ~4 years) and we'll see how well it's held up then. It's been my general experience that things start breaking/ stop working 1 to 2 years into use. I've had this for half a year so far and it's been flawless.

And as someone else said, this is currently still the nicest computer out there.

Those Z's aren't depreciating. Those people probably picked those Z's up from the various Microsoft 40-60% off Z deals. If you picked up a Z12 for $829, blowing it out for $1200 is a fair bit of profit.

Buying a laptop and using it for a few months and selling it for no loss or a profit is no big deal. I've done that with 80% of the laptops I've every used and sold. I could sell my current many months old Z for about $200 more than I paid for it.

Maybe I'm too much of a newb when it comes to reselling computers. I've only gotten rid of a broken one (for more than I paid when it was working) lol.

Do you typically resell it with some software loaded up? People seem to be suckers for CS5 and Office.

It's hard to balance between getting good use (time wise) out of the VAIO and reselling it for a good price. The biggest problem is depreciation and the initial very high cost of the Z's in particular.
I've had my z for 1 year now. So far it's been great (touch wood). Occasional screen blackout (for about 2 seconds only). If i sell it now, i can expect to lose around 40%. If i wait for another year, is anyone going to buy a two year old laptop? that's the problem.

I buy a laptop that fits my needs at a price I can afford. Resale value has never come into it.

I have lots of technology, including more than one laptop, so can't afford to buy new as often as some of you guys seem to! I typically refresh my smallest portable laptop every four years or so.

Most of the laptops I've taken out of frontline service have been repurposed for a variety of things, or given away to friends & family who can't afford one.

I think the Z was the last laptop that I will ever buy at a cost of over £2000. The resale value of laptops has nosedived as there's just so many new laptops available for pittance.

Due to the speed that technology is moving, no one's going to want our current VAIO's in 2 years time. Everyone will be wanting to use Windows 8, not our 'ancient' VAIO's that 'only' run Windows 7 thanks to Sony's reluctance to make drivers easily available.

If I was in the market for a new machine today, I'd be happy to accept the SB or wait for the SA as a midrange choice. They may not be on par with the Z in terms of quality, but they are not two grand machines! (at least I hope the SA won't be...!).

Got to buy high end notebooks in the US. Prices anywhere else will be horrendous. I paid USD2000 for the cheapest Z in South East Asia a year ago. If i had gone with Asus or Acer with the same specs, it would not have cost more than USD900.

SB looks nice and i believe it has an aluminium palm rest. However, it does not have FHD or 1600X900, which in my case, is a deal breaker.
