I have a Sony Vaio SZ 320CP and I was wondering how long do they last? I bought mine second hand and have been hearing that they tend to break down. I bought mine with the intention that it'd last over 3 years and such, but I hear all these stories of people's breaking down  . Please help, thanks.

I also have a SZ320CP, it is about 2 months old and is working perfectly. I don't think you can predict when it will break down.

i don't think the SZ line is even old enough to make any statistics on how they long they last.

haha hm. I guess people who have had theirs break down must've been within months, I guess.

Since I'm here anyways, I'll throw in another question and if you have any comments that'd be great. I bought my SZ second hand but I don't have a receipt. I don't think the SZ3 series has even been out for a year, do you think I can get it serviced under the warranty since it would be impossible for an SZ3 to be over a year old (at the time of writing this)? The warranty says proof of purchase is required, but I don't have that. I know Sony's customer support ain't so great, so what are your opinions?

Well --- you have to keep in mind that the majority of people who post on forums like these are coming here with either:

1 - Questions about particular model/brand of computer.
2 - Questions abotu problems they're having with their model/brand of computer.

The majority of people do not come to post: "Just checking in --- my computer is running fine!" ;)

I haven't had any problems with the SZ360 I got back in October. Still super happy with it! :)

I'll also chime in to say that I've had a number of very good customer service experiences with Sony (and some bad ones too). I'll also mention that I have shipped several notebooks back into Sony for repair/evaluation ---- and, unless I'm remembering something wrong, I didn't always include copies of my receipts. The best course of action would be to call and ask, me thinks.

They might be able to lookup the purchase date using your service tag number. The 300 series came out in August.

Thanks guys! I talked with online support from Sony and they were quick to respond, although they weren't willing to find out my date of purchase through the service tag. It's not that they couldn't, but they said they can't online and I'd have to phone.

As for the warranty starting when the Vaio is registered; I don't think so. I'm not sure if the previous owner registered this Vaio or not. If the warranty started since registration date, then I'd wait years before registering :). I did try to register it, but it asks for date of purchase >.<.

Anyhow, thanks for all your help!

break down? that's too general especially with computers. there are many parts in the computer and are made from many companies.

if the hard drive fails are you going to blame sony, or the company who made it (hitachi/fujitsu/etc), or the person who never knew how to defrag?

as for me the computer works fine. if you did a history search of my posts you'd see that i had an earlier problem about no starts but i figured it out. it was a microsoft issue and not a sony issue.

I have a SZ140 CTO bought for my wife as soon as the SZ was released. Only issue with wear and tear that we've had was the battery permanently died. Thankfully it was 30 days before warranty expiration. After about 30min with customer service I got them to transfer me to tech support and they promply sent me a new battery, quickly and free of all charges. The 140 runs like a champ still. Core Duo 1.83, 1Ghz RAM, 80GB HDD, DVD DL R/RW, no camera or BT.

I now have a SZ460 for myself and have plenty of buggy issues but most are involving Vista. I made sure to pay 2 years extended warranty with accidental damage replacement this time around.
