My FZ4000 with 5400 RPM HDD is nearly silent. I also have SZ381 with 7200 RPM HDD (Hitachi model). I would say that 7200 RPM HDD is quiet enough. Most of the sound come from SZ fan. I haven't try installing (switching) the 7200 RPM with my FZ but I would say that the HDD would be quieter with FZ since FZ has thicker casing and therefore encapsulating the sound from HDD better.

In the mean time, I would recommend that you configure your FZ with the cheapest HDD available and buy 7200 RPM separately. Sony asking price for 7200 RPM is insane. Moreover, you can sell the old HDD later at eBay and save even more money.

Sony is only asking for 70 dollars more from the default HDD to a 200 GB 7200 RPM HDD
