They put a decent amount of stuff. But there are a lot of guides online that can tell you what programs are stupid and what are useful as to what you should delete when you get it.

So it may be a good idea to just reinstall windows on it.. The raid controller they use is the intel matrix right? so drivers should be in the windows disc

You'll lose important stuff like the vaio control ceter which allows you to change how the hardware buttons work (stanima/power switch) you will lose screen color calibrations as that is controled with software, volume indicator software among many others. Just install IOBits and uninstall the unnessesary stuff like antivirus, vaio gate, and whatever else.

See the guides here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/son...rces-vpc-z1-faq-windows-7-install-guides.html The procedure is more or less the same. Download the files from the Sony support page for your model. The good news is that everything works, even on Windows 8.

If you could have chosen the 'fresh start' option while ordering, that would have been the best as there is very little stuff that is not needed.

Actually, Sony has gotten much better on the amount of "crapware" they put on their machines. My SVE15 that I bought a couple of months ago came with some really good Sony software.

With that said, there are two things that I always do when I restore my VAIO:

    1. Go to "Content Analysis Manager" and turn off analysis of everything (photos, music, video). That thing is a hog :)

    2. Go to "Folder watcher" settings, and turn off everything.

The other alternative is to :

    1. Uninstall "Media Gallery" application.
    2. Uninstall "PMB VAIO Plug-in"

that will also get rid of the content-sharing and analysis drivers. Of course, this is what's on my machine. I don't own an S series, but I'm pretty sure the software set is probably very close.
