A colleague and I are both looking to upgrade our present base model VPC-Z1's and are wondering if we should wait a couple of months, when the new Z is out in full production. Curious to know opinions people have about this and, if you know, what happened to prices of the VGN-Z's after the Z11 was introduced?

uhh... I don't have any experience with the VPC-Z... but if you think about it, if you can find a VPC-Z when the new Z comes out, good luck. Considering that the Z is pretty much only desirable as a CTO and seeing that there are very few places worldwide that even have CTO VPC-Zs anymore (ie. Japan). I don't think the prices will fall too much as the supply is low and I would guess the demand is pretty high.

Yeah, it's just a study for demand and supply when it comes to price increase/decrease. Demand isn't particularly great for the Z, but supply is indeed scarce. Many countries (including mine) have ran out of Z's in both Sonystyle stores and other major computer retailers. (In fact, the Z has been pulled in March already in my country)

Of course refurbs are a different story, but considering that refurbs are already a great deal I wouldn't imagine that the VPC-Z will suffer too much from a price drop. The VPC-Z is probably still comparable to a mainstream laptop into late 2012 or maybe even 2013, so it will still hold it's ground against other laptops quite well.

I doubt current Z can be a mainstream in 2013 consider tech development

Are you all saying that you think a new Z today at $3,000+ CTO is a good deal, but a refurb at $1,400 will not hold its value?

And I only mean through 2011, not much beyond, if at all.

Yes it can. Considering the far superior tech it packs now, a mainstream in early 2013 may only be able to match it. By "mainstream" I'm referring to fairly affordable computers of the same size priced at around 700-800 USD. If your notebook is still comparable to others, you can still price it relatively aggresive.

Intel Core i7-640M-This is currently the world's second fastest dual core processor. The fastest i7-2620M has minimal difference with this CPU. Ivy Bridge may be able to push the difference further away though. I'd expect dual core i5 ivy to be equivalent to a dual core i7 arrandale.

8GB DDR3@1066 Mhz-Standard for most laptops. 1066 Mhz may be a little bottleneck but if you need anything more than that the Z isn't for you anyway.

128/256/512 GB SSD: Barely any laptops offer SSD right now. I would expect SSDs to come into the market in 2014 at affordable prices.

GMA HD/NVIDIA GT 330M: While the GMA HD does suck big time, the integration of the 330M into the Z made it a different story. Most mainstream 13 inchers don't even offer a discrete GPU. I don't think even the ivy bridge IGP can beat the 330M.

1.39 kg: Most mainstream 13" laptops weigh 1.9+kg! In fact, my 4 year old Fujitsu S2210 notebook weighed 1.7 kg, which is still lighter than the average of 2011 laptops!

EDIT: OH! Not to mention a 1080p screen. There isn't even a 900p option for 13" screens. Those who come the closest are the M14x (14", 1920x1080) and the Macbook Air (13.3", 1440x900)

Microcenter is selling the Z13 (i5 460m, 128gb ssd) new for $1699 which I think is pretty good, pulled the trigger on one at my local store. I've tried many 12-13 inchers, really was tempted recently to just get the MBP or Air, but the Z is such a great little beast. Had a VGN-Z before, sold it, and have come back full circle to the Z!
