I'm up for a new notebook at work, and my boss is going to want me to get one soon for accounting reasons. I've pretty much settled on a Vaio SZ, but I'm wondering how long after the release of a new chipset Sony usually takes to release new notebooks. I can probably wait until the end of May, but will have to order by June. Will the SZ5 be out by then?

    Thanks.

I am wondering the same thing. If I had to buy a laptop today, I would get the SZ450N/C. I'm hoping Sony releases the SZ500 series soon.

My dream machine would be a VAIO SZ5xx equiped with:
    • Intel Centrino Pro "Santa Rosa" 965GM chipset + ICH8M southbridge
    • Core 2 Duo T7300 @ 2.0GHz
    • nVidia GeForce Go 8400 (hopefully 128MB dedicated)
    • 2GB DDR2 RAM (hopefully 667MHz)
    • 160GB SATA HDD
    • 1GB Intel Turbo Memory "Robson"
    • Intel 4965AGN wireless chip w/802.11n
    • Windows Vista Business

I'll probably upgrade to Vista Ultimate and get a Fujitsu 160GB 7200rpm SATA 3.0 HDD when it becomes available. :D

    Just want 2GB RAM with 667MHz (not the 533MHz) & GeForce Go8400 128MB dedicated.

I'm planning on buying a SZ as well but isn't it possible to add more RAM after the 2GB? In other words is 2GB currently the max for a SZ?

Sony hasnt announced their plans for Santa Rosa, But judging by other large manufacturers and sony's past speed adopting new technologies, Id say 4 weeks at the earliest, 8 weeks at the latest.

The search tool is your friend. Short answer: yes, even current SZs can go beyond 2GB. Due to limitations of the 32-bit OS, you're not going to get much more than 3GB usable anyway. To get access to all 4GB, you'd have to use a 64-bit OS>

    So SZ + VISTA 64 + 4GB RAM = 4GB?

In theory, yes. BUt that assumes Sony will support 64-bit versions of the OS (which they have not to date), and you'd have to lop off whtever the OS needed.

Laptops pretty much have a hard limitation right now. As is, 3 - 4GB is fairly expensive.
