insanitor and arash84v, please take this conversation to PM. It really doesn't have anything to do with the thread.

    Thanks,

    Hi!

    Have a VGN-CR31S with BIOS R2101Q0.
Tried altering the value 05BB to 001 (from 000 to 001) but when I am going to load the file it says "updateNvram (1h, TEST)...Failed to open file TEST

    How can I solve this?
Also how can I really find out that 05BB is the value I will change?
All I got in the list I made with SYMCMOS was a bunch of numbers, nothing that said that the value 05BB was the VT key (etc.)?

Oh and I didnt change the ACHI or AHCI key since I did not know what that key was. Is this why its not working?
If so how do I find it out?

    EDIT:

Solved it so now it writes the new settings. Editing it in Notepad did not work, had to edit it using pedit in DOS.
Only problem is that the value is now 0001 from 0000 but still no virtualisation option. The CPU supports it, I've checked it out.
    Anybody knows what I missed?

    TheSwede86.

Two things, are you certain that is the right register to alter? Check the master list again. Is you specific BIOS in the master list?

Second do the first step again with Syncmos and create a new dump file. Take a look at the results from that dump and see if the register really has been changed.

Thanks guys but I was wrong. There isnt any option at all in the BIOS but I D/L the VT.ISO (or .IMG) and it reported that VT now was supported and my vmware virtual workstaiton works fine :D :D :D :D

    Thank you all=)

    What I did:

Download HP-USB tool. Win98 start discs,Symcmos and PEDIT.
Make the USB bootable with HP-USB tool. (FAT32)
Don't be alarmed that you cant see any files on your USB, they are still there.
Copy PEDIT and Symcmos to your USB.
Default settings in BIOS then ESC to chose boot device.
Boot from USB then write "symcmos -v2 -lDefault.txt" without "" (l is a l as in last)
    Wait until its finished
Write PEDIT Default.txt scrolled down to 05BB and change 000 (or 0000) to 001 (or 0001)
    Save by pressing CTRL+S
    Exit by pressing ALT+X
    Write "symcmos -v2 -uDefault.txt"
    Wait til finished
Restart with CTRL+ALT+DEL or Power button

I think it didn't work earlier because you just press Ctrl+Alt+Del after doing the changes. When you turn ON/OFF VT, you need to turn OFF your computer & turn it ON again to get the setting to take effect.

    Hello,

my SZ71 can't wait to have VT enabled, especially as my 'productive' machine is running under VMWare on that box...

My only problem is that any attempt to create the bootable USB stick has failed... there's no error, excepted that the system says 'Operating system not found' when trying to boot from it... (the 3 hidden files are present: io.sys, command.com and a third one... plus the tools, of course...)

I tried formatting from both the W7 Ultimate x64 (the 'native' system), and from an XP x86 (virtual guest), same error. I tried 2 different USB sticks, same error.

No clue how I could overcome this ???

Did exactly the same thing with the HP tool, no error, but the stick won't boot (OS not found). What's wrong here ?? What stick did you use ?? I used a cruzer mini from SanDIsk (256MB) and an Apacer 128MB (both with FAT32, and the Win98Boot stuff).

    ANy hints welcome...

did you use the special format utility specifying that it make the flash disk bootable? The MBR/Bootrecord needs to be written correctly in addition to those 3 files. you need to use the hp utility and make sure to choose the "make bootable" optiono

    hello,

    My Model is:
    Sony Vaio VGN-TZ37GN

"Before you attempt this modification, make sure that the BIOS on your SZ is updated to these versions: R0112N0 for Napa SZs or R0122S5 for Santa Rosa SZs"
Do I need to update my bios, before I do step no 1 as in your instruction ?

does by enabling VT, means at the same time enabling AHCI ?
    VGN-TZ37 R0081N7 reg 0363

    For Napa SZs - R0112N0
    AHCI: (015C) [0000] ---> (015C) [0001]
    VT-x: (0354) [0000] ---> (0354) [0001]
at the front page, you teached us that we need to change two registers.. but at the list we were only given one register for each model...? I need to change AHCI rather than enable vt

WHOA!!!!! Hold on a second. I don't want to be rude but if you are asking this question I am afraid you might be in over your head and I do NOT want to see you brick your machine. The specific instructions you are referring to were for an SZ model and you have a TZ. The last thing you would want to do is apply a bios for specific model to a different model.

If I am misunderstanding the nature of your question, I apologize. But we get a lot of "newbies" here and we need to be VERY VERY careful to handle questions that might be of that type.

That is because very few folks have bothered with the AHCI stuff. Almost everyone was only interested in the VT implementation. Where folks have given AHCI info it has been posted. But such cases are quite rare.

    Hi,

Is DEP the same as AHCI? If not, I can't see how this utility can verify if AHCI is switched on? It looks to be able to verify VT though.

    Hi,
I don't know what DEP is, but for sure it is able to detect wether the VT is enabled.
As regard the AHCI, I performed a small search on Google. The 7th result brings me here where you may read a good suggestion to test if SATA is enabled or not. Maybe it is good for you too. Try also to read here, it may help you. It was the second result. ;) Good luck!

In any case you may also use whatever Linux live distribution you want (Sysrescuecd is very good) and perform a
    Code:
    fdisk -l
If the results are like /dev/ sd* then you have sata enabled, else if you have something like /dev/ hd*, it is not.

EDIT: I'm not really sure about the last methodology I mentioned, but it should be right in that way.

    What is SATA?
SATA is a computer bus interface for connecting host bus adapters to mass storage devices such as hard disk drives and optical drives. While AHCI is one of the mode which the SATA controller operates in. SATA controllers also can operate in IDE mode. For more information, please visit WIKI website.

You can try to install Windows XP on your notebook. If AHCI is enabled, you will unable to install it.

And on the FZ series you WON'T be able to install XP directly from a stock install CD because of this very issue.

Don't worry, AHCI is enabled in all the FZ series. You can confirm it by installing the Intel SATA/ AHCI controller driver.

I know what I have to do now, I will try your approach ( change every 0000 value to 0001) and in case nothing it's burned I will post the registry for other "happy" vaio owner with R0130J9 Bios.

Highly doubtful and not really pertinent to this thread about VT. You'd be better off starting a separate thread on the topic.

Please don't cross post. You already started a new thread about this. Forum rules are such that this is not allowed.

If it use Phoenix BIOS, go to my BIOS MOD request thread & download the PDF file. You can find the exact address/location to enable AHCI by following the instruction.

Howdy, new to the forum, I'm here for the same reason as everyone else.
As you can see by my choice of member name what platform I'm operating on.
Just wondering if anyone else in the world bought this machine except for me?
I am studying network management with the Navy and am a bit of a geek but not really an engineer.
Very interested in Virtualization for reasons of training on multiple OS's as well as developing testing environments without too much extra hardware.

I'm going to use the recommendations made for the other FZ's near mine in model number to attempt the enabling of VT.

Am successfully booting from a flash drive. Attempted to dump the VRAM once with the command "symcmos -v2 -|Default.txt". Unsuccessful.
I think the command should read "symcmos -v2 -lDefault.txt" with an "L" as in list instead of the Pipe character. Will report back.

It is NOT the pipe character. And do not use a similar model, use the EXACT SAME BIOS version as your guide for which register to change. This is very important. The BIOS is what you are changing and it is the BIOS version that matters.
