its a shame the new xp drivers they have arent entirely up to scratch with the factory image drivers.

Noticed the other day the webcam doesnt fire up the VCC software to allow adjusting of contrast and brightness etc.

I just reinstalled a new copy of windows, and downloaded all the drivers from sony web site and everything seemed to be ok untill i unpluged the power.

If i try to switch from power plugin to battery and viceversa, a blue screen appears that doesn't give me the time to read and then windows restars.

After it restarts it works fine even with battery, but when I plugin the power it restarts again.

Any ideas of what could be wrong? What software or driver could be missing?

    I got a Vaio VGN-SZ340

And by the way, when clicking to the link above it shows an error, no tutorial comes up.

    Hello,

I own a VGN-SZ650N and I've been watching this thread, trying to get things to work properly at the same time. I was not entirely succesful, I'm afraid, but your help is much appreciated. As per your request, I'm attaching the output of 'devcon find *' from my laptop. FYI, as of 09/25/2007, Sony offers XP drivers on their website, for those wishing to downgrade their SZ650N/C. I've had mixed results with these. Some of the drivers work, but others, most notably video drivers, do not (executables run and terminate, but nothing happens - devices are not recognized). Good luck to the rest of you and I'll let you know how mine turned out.

    Regards,
    NGNeer

Attached: the devcon reading from SPEED mode (as opposed to STAMINA mode attached in the previous message). Turns out that working in STAMINA mode was what was preventing the installation of the nVidia drivers and of the VCC7 webcam drivers. The drivers are now correctly installed.

The only remaining things I have to resolve:
Unidentified "SM Bus Controller" - most likely WWAN
Fn Brightness Keys - don't work in SPEED nor in STAMINA
SATA controller - XP only shows a lot of standard IDE controllers

Any help is much appreciated. I noticed that bogart's video clip already shows a SATA controller in the drivers overview section. Are there any special procedures, or is XP supposed to detect these automatically?

    Thanks,
    NGNeer

    Hi Bogart:

Thank you Very much for explaining the procedure and putting up the links. I followed your procedure to install XP on my SZ480.

Everything worked perfect except: Camera and SmartWi. My notebook comes with cingular WWAN. When I tried to use SmartWI supplied for WinXP, it consumes the total CPU. Do you have any idea why this is happening?

Also, the links you provided for camera capture utility no longer working. I installed the Vaio camera utility and it is not working as expected. I mean I am unable to run this program. Any help is appreciated. Mine is VCC5 camera.

    Thanks a lot.

Sorry, I don't own a WWAN device so I wouldn't know what could be causing that CPU utilization problem. Have you tried Cingular Connection Manager and the firmware update for your WWAN device?

Try the VAIO Camera Capture Utility in the Sony Notebook Utility v1.0 package. That utility can to take snapshots and record video with the webcam. VAIO Camera Utility is an entirely different program which adjusts camera settings during the use of webcam related programs like Skype or MSN Messenger. Links are in the first post.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Fine. I have not activated cingular WWAN service, so I was afraid to play around with it. I will install and update my results. The problem with smartWi was it consumes more than 50% CPU all the time and even though the notebook is idle with WLAN, bluetooth and WWAN turned off.

I realized my mistake. I will do it.

    Bogart,

I hope I'm not late with this.

I have a SZ-650N and downgraded to XP Pro per your instructions. (To the best of my ability anyway.)

Everything is working fine. However I have one unknown device. I'm at a loss as to what it could be.

As you requested here is the hwids.txt for a SZ-650N
    (Sorry, it's long)
Thank you for your help in advance.

Double click on the unknown device in Device Manager (WinKey+R -> devmgmt.msc), go to the Details tab and it should show the hardware ID for that device. Let me know what it is.

Thank you very much for this guide - everything's working just fine on my SZ650N/C with XP Pro SP2 and the new BIOS dated Dec.4, 2007 ( ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/OS/XPDOWNGRADE/SZ6/BIOS ).

One thing though... the CPU fan seems to be much more noticeable now than it was under the original Vista Business install - in fact, it never really seems to spin down, even when idle. Does anybody else have this issue and/or a solution?

Thanks very much for your help!

I am having the same problem with Sony Vaio fn keys. I have been online with Sony for hours to try and solve this probelm It is a serious one because I believe it will shorten the life of the monitor always being on very bright. It is almost hard to look at! I am going to give Sony another try but I have done all of the downloads. One question I have is... does it really matter if you load "Sony shared library first?" I did a format got everything up and running including fingerprint and camera but not fn key. I did not do It in the right order though and I hate to redo all that work if it will not fix the fn key problem. Open for any suggestions.

Install these and your fn keys should work.

    • SONY NOTEBOOK CONTROL (FIRMWARE EXTENSION PARSER) and SONY PROGRAMMABLE I/O drivers
    • SNYUTILS (Sony Utilities DLL)
    • Sony Shared Library XP
    • RESTART AFTER INSTALLING SONY SHARED LIBRARY
    • SUS (Setting Utility Series)
    • VES (VAIO Event Service)

If you had installed some of these drivers or utilities and your fn keys didn't work, uninstall them from Add or Remove Programs (WinKey+R -> appwiz.cpl) and try again by downloading everything in this list from the download links in the first post and installing them in order.

Brightness FN keys within XP. What binary drivers or service needs to be running for the keys to function.

Can someone isolate the program used for these controls?

    Hi Guys,
this forum has helped me a lot in downgrading my windows on SZ 4 machine. However even though my XP is running fine now, I am experiencing that my Laptop Fan is running continuously which eats up my battery very quickly and also on couple of ocassion my machine has shut down possibly because of overheating (I guess).
All this I experienced soon after installing XP. Could I have missed a driver? I would really appreciate comments on my situation. Thanks!

    Fixed.

Both Santa Rosa and Napa Event Service utilities I listed don't work? I have a SZ150, which is nearly identical to your SZ110B, and the Napa version of VES I linked worked fine (it was used in the video). After you have installed Napa versions of VAIO Event Service and VAIO Power Management, you can upgrade to the Santa Rosa versions without receiving any error messages, if those make any difference.

Hi guys, this is my first post. I have been eying the SZ as a probable laptop purchase before the next school year starts.

I have a question, naturally. Is it possible to slipstream most of if not all the drivers and other software (or at least just the drivers) into an XP Pro install disc with nLite? It seems some stuff has to be installed in a certain order, so I figure it's up in the air at best. I'd like to avoid installing 30 different pieces of software or drivers once I get the OS installed.

You can do it, but not entirely with nLite. The drivers and utilities that need to be installed from their setup wizards or require reboots will need to be handled a different way. You can learn how to do everything by visiting these links:

    Good morning.
Sorry to bother you, I recently change the OS system on my VAIO G1 from Japanese to English Vista. Everything is working fine, but the battery life! Witch is suppose to be 5 hours, and now is only working 2 and a half!!!... BIG Issue... I found the driver for the Power Control Manager at Sony support under the folder SPEF, inside there is a file named: sonync.dll witch Im pretty sure is what I need to installed along the sonync.sys, the thing is that I dont know how???
There is no executable on the folder, and this DLL file I dont have ani idea of how to make it run/add to th driver!.
I tried to copy the fil directly to the folder : c:windows/system32/driverstore/sony.nc.inf folder, but It doesnt allow to do it this way.
I will REALLY appreciate any help/idea/instructions of how to do this.

    Thank you very much.

    Hope Corporation

I think the Conexant 56K Modem drivers corrupted my sound card drivers. I now get the error "device no present" for both the modem and sigmatel device. Same if I try to run the modem setup again as well, I cant even uninstall it.

    Hi guys, my first post!

First of all let me thank you for this greatly helpfull topic!

I just bought a SZ650N/C and I'll downgrade to Windows XP SP2. I was reading the topic and found almost all information I think I'll need to do this operation. But when I tried to download the drivers and utilities for the Windows XP, I found myself completely lost in the Sony sources! I found the drives here:

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNSZ650NC&region_id=1

and also found in this FTP:

    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/OS/XPDOWNGRADE/SZ6/

It seens to be a little different from the two locations! Which of these locations should I use to download the drivers?

Thank for the help, and sorry for any mistake with my English!

Any location is fine. The esupport.sony.com website is primarily for North American customers and the FTP is for European customers. Hardware-wise, all SZ6s are identical, regardless of location.

You may also download the same files from Sony-Asia and updates from Sony Japan.
