I did the clean install on my brand new SR. After I tried to install the programs/drivers that I did want, I restarted my computer so the updates could be configured. Problem is, my computer freezes when the updates are being configured, and when it's done, the computer restarts by itself again. Does anybody know what's wrong?

Did you wait until after ALL of the drivers and programs were installed before you did this reboot? Also did you install the items in the right order? Order is VERY important. At this point you should probably start over.

Reinstall the OS and then reinstall the drivers and apps. Find a clean install guide for your machine to get the proper sequence. And if a driver or app asks for a reboot do it immediately. (Actually, I would reboot after each one just to be safe.)

    Hi All,
I am a VAIO-CR12 GH/B User and it came with vista home basic installed as and all the bloatware. And it was deadslow :).
So i downloaded the winxp Drivers ,Apps and Utilities from sony's asia-pacific website for my model. And successfully installed the OS and got everything working :) except the InstantMode, and the capture key functionality.

I was fine with this...but now i want to install vista ultimate.
I have the drivers ,hotfix and backup available in Recovery CD 1.
However the softwares that were preinstalled were not available directly from the application Recovery CD, so had to extract them using the kcap utility.

I made a clean install of Vista ultimate. Installed all drivers hotfix and Applications incuding Instanton and AVModeLauncher.

So i have everything installed and my lapy is working great except the Instant Mode. It installs correctly but didnt function. when i press the av button it gives an error first "Entered undefined Mode" and then after some linux stuff goes on until it shutsdown.

How can i get back my Instant Mode functionality on vista ultimate.
I am sure that i have installed correct appilcations as i have extracted them from the Appilcations Recovery CD.

    Please Reply.

Wrong thread! This thread is about a semi clean install. This is not the same thing as a clean install which you did. Find a thread about a clean install on your specific model (I am pretty sure there are one or more such threads here) or start a new thread. Otherwise folks coming here latter to find info on the same problem you have might look right over this "semi-clean install" thread thinking, correctly I might add, it will have no info on the problem you and they have.

I couldnt find a specific thread for my model so i posted here, as the info for which i am looking is partially available in this thread.
However i found a work around for my problem. Posting as a new thread ;).

    Search for my posts. :X

I searched for your new thread, so I'll post a note to you here. If you go to the main page of this Sony forum and click on the "Search this forum" box you can type in "Clean install CR" and get a list of several threads with a mention of this. The best of those threads is this: Link to CR Clean install thread.

The third message in that thread points you here: Solution found for CR clean install

That message contains a link, which because of the STUPID profantity filters here that look for the letters S*H*I*T in a row in any word or URL, the link is unuseable. But if you follow the instructions in the message you can get to the solution. Or just click here for a direct link to it: Direct link to solution

That should get you started. If you run into trouble or have questions take them to one of the two NoteBookReview threads show above.

I am worried I won't be able to play any BDs if i perform the clean install :S

The semi-clean install keeps necessary programs and drivers on the computer.

I have performed the semi clean install, and it went great (thanks a lot).

BUT, i have a problem, I have done my disk clean up, then a disk defrag. Finally i wanted to shrink my C volume into smaller pieces, but i cannot shrink it more than 178 MB. I have read that this could be a page file size issue but i couldn't figured it out yet

    Any suggestion?

There are some files, the Pagefile among them that can't be moved while Windows is running. This is what is preventing you from resizing the Volume with Vista. You could try turning off the pagefile, TEMPORARILY (do not leave it turned off) while you resize the volume but chance are there will be another of these files that will hold you up.

The best way is to use a third party BOOTABLE tool that will run outside of Windows and perform the task. My favorite, although a bit cryptic to use is BootIT NG.

Hello again, Well i have already tried by dissabling the Pagefile and turning off the Hibernation with no sucess.

I'll try to use the third party tool, and if that doesn't give good results, i'll reinstall my laptop.

You did reboot after you disabled the pagefile, right? You can't delete or even disable it while Vista is running. It only changes on the NEXT reboot. But like I said the Pagefile is NOT the only file that has unmoveable blocks and can keep you from shrinking the partition while the OS is running.

[SHRINK - SOLVED] HI, i did the following:

    - Downloaded and burned the iso GParted proagram
    - Run GParted (Using VESA as graphical driver), then i partitioned my volume as I wanted.
    - I restarted my lap, but at boot time, it said that windows couldn't start(some files where missing or they were corrupted), so I booted from a Vista CD and chose the repair option.
    - Then everything went ok

I suffered a while but it did wort the effort.

    regards

So I've been looking at this for a while, and finally did it on my SZ650N that I have had for a year now--it was in pretty bad shape.

I went through with it, stopped the Launcher, removed any programs with Revo that I didn't need, and then ran Launcher to install only the Bluetooth and Camera I believe. Unfortunately, I'm still at 69 processes, low CPU usage like before, and memory usage of 44% (of 2GB which is about 10% lower). I expected better results. Below are the processes that are running. Any ideas? Thanks everyone. Great guide though

Is this the same process as system recovery which will erase all the data in the computer and will restore the computer back to its factory settings?

Then you would install using your recovery disk?

I'm trying to do this on my brand new FW. I'm a novice for sure when it comes to recovery--never had/needed to use it before.

When doing the F10 thing, I get into a screen that I have never seen before. What do I do there?

    Edit Boot Options
Edit Windows boot options for: Start VAIO Recovery Center
    Path:\windows\system32\boot\winload.exe
    [/DETECTHAL/MININT RDIMAGEOFFSET=8192 RDIMAGELENGTH=3161088 RDPATH=multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\SOURCES\vrc.wim

    ENTER=submit
    ESC=Cancel

Does this mean that I'm not in the correct partition? Or am I in the right place? What next...

just did a semi-clean install on the vaio Z and it seems almost everything is here

things i found missing after a semi-clean install are:
-finger print driver (tried installing the driver but it doesnt seem to work)
-windvd and a few programs that can be found in the recovery

thats all i found for now, the fn and s1 / s2 works, not sure if i missed anything

any of you guys here tried this for the vaio Z? If so, what are you missing and how, if possible, did you get the fingerprint driver working again?

so just finished the process with the SR. One important note is that there is no Launch.exe or Launcher.exe in the SR Recovery Center folder. Instead, its called Vaiorec.exe. After Windows rebooted for the final time in the process, all my drivers seemed to be working fine. I assume we dont have to reinstall all the drivers manually? Also, I cant find the the Catalyst Control Panel for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 anywhere in the Recovery Center. Anybody knows where it is?

    note for SR user:

I tried this process with SR (VGN-SR290) and it works great. I tested with both options of restore drive C: only (for existing sony harddrive) and complete whole system (for new harddrive - that it will recreate recover partition). When it restarted after Vista logo and said something like Factory process, I hit ctrl+shift+esc, and killed Recovery process. After reboot, one driver was missing (intel wireless driver). I didn't have to backup c:\program files\sony" . I used recover disc's "Reinstall Programs or Drivers" option to reinstall some programs/drivers that I was missing. I had to reinstall "Wireless Lan Driver (Intel)" (from Programs tab, not driver tab)

sony program that I installed after semi-clean

    Graphic Driver (ATI)
    Sony Shared Library
Setting Utility Series (for Fn button to show bar on screen) (already installed during semi clean)
Vaio Event Service (for Funtion (Fn) button detection) (already installed during semi clean)
Vaio Power Management (for Vaio Power profile in control panel) (already installed during semi clean)
Vaio Control Center (already installed during semi clean)
Vaio Wallperper Contents (already installed during semi clean) - (uninstall)
Vaio Recovery Shortcut (to access recover program)
    Vaio Document
    OEM Information Registry Settings
    Protector Suite QL (Fingerprint programs)
Vaio Wireless Wizard (for wireless setup wizard)
Vaio Mode Switch (for Mode keyboard)
    Vaio Update (for Vaio updates)
    Webcam Companion 2
    Wireless Lan Driver (Intel)
Vaio help and support (for help when pressing F1)

For user with ATI : I uninstalled ATI display driver from control panel, and installed Catalyst Control suit from ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/VAIO/ORIGINAL/GRAPHICS DRIVER ATI_VOLANTE2_8.513.1.0.ZIP
(credit to Hamud) This brings back Catalyst Control Panel.

Hi. I have a Sony FZ, and I was trying to do a restore on it. All the steps before I went through just fine. However, at the step where the computer is supposed to boot form the recovery disk 1, "cannot find BOOTMGR" showed up and booted from hard drive instead. Do you know what's going on there? Thanks.

When you installed the ATI CC from that link you provided, does it identify your ATI card as the 3450 or 3470?

Tried this on FW (VGN-FW290) and it works like a charm :) .Processes came down from 89 to 55, CPU usage from 40 to 10 and free space increased from 182 to 200.
Had to use the ATI exe link by SlowPork.

Thanks to everybody for posting this. :)

VTEC Racer - ATI shows my card as 3650- which it was ;) .

I am running Sony Vaio VGN-CS110E

Regarding Step 2: I found the "Vaio Recovery" folder but the "Launcher.exe" file was not inside one of the subfolders. Instead, there is an independent folder called "Vaio Launcher" in the C:>Program Files>Sony. And here is a list of what is in that folder:
    AML
    AML_tools
    ExtractIcon.dll
    LaunchStartApp
    mfc80.dll
    mfc80u.dll
    Microsoft.VC80.crt.manifest
    msvcm80.dll
    msvcp80.dll
    msvcr80.dll
    tools
    VAIOLauncher
    Version
    VESAVModeButton.dll
    VL_Setting
    (sub-folders below)
    Icon
    Sound
    stringtables

Will I still be able to use this semi-clean install? If so, what should I execute for Step 5 & 8? Thank you!

I am about to try this on my new AW when it arrives. Just to make sure I'm getting this right; I use the recovery partition by hitting F10 during start-up at the Vaio logo, correct? (which is after creating my recovery DVDs and copying the folder with the exe file "Launch or Launcher") Then ctrl+shft+esc at the step you mentioned in the process to kill the program. At that point I'm going to get back to my desktop, place that folder back in the correct directory (C:\windows... or C:\program files... "the same place I found it"), then open it and run Launch(er).exe and choose the programs I want to install? Another question I have is: on IIIaman's post he said to press ctrl+alt+del, is that right or is ctrl+shft+esc better?

I just need a little clarification about this. When you say "Recovery Center" are you talking about installing items from the Launch.exe, or by using the recovery DVDs I will make? I'm asking this because, after reading a few results from people, I'm worried about losing a few programs like WinDVD BD or wireless functions. Also, speaking of recovery DVDs, if this doesn't work or if I do something wrong, will I be able to just pop in my recovery DVDs and start over (or leave it alone)?

I am very thankful, btw, even though I haven't tried it yet. It's just great to know that there are people out there that are willing to take the time to help with things like this. I will post the full results of my AW semi-clean install.

hmm before reading this thread, i went ahead and reformatted my nr series sony. i dint back up any of that recovery center stuff. nonetheless, after my clean install vista ultimate failed (fn keys wont work) i needed to recover, but panicked when i found out i had no recovery cds packaged with this notebook. i couldn't find a recovery partition on the computer either. but somehow i used the f10 key during boot, and now my comp is back to original. anyone knows how this recovery worked even though i formatted the whole drive? im just really curious how sony pulled this off.

You didn't format the whole drive, you only formated a partition on the drive. The other (hidden) partition contains the info used to enable the F10 restore. Now create the backup DVD set and grab a copy of the clean install instuctions. Then you should be able to do a clean install of Vista with all functionality.

I have SR 290 and did the semi-clean and everything work perfectly. However there are two issues that need everyone's input.
    1. USB is slow. The transfer rate is only 15 MB.(not USB1, but definitely not USB 2.0) Comparing to my sister's Macbook, the same file took her 2 miniutes and mine took 20 minutes.
    2. Anyone able to partition the hard-drive into three rather than two. I mean, when you did the semi-clean since it only give me two partitions max.
    Thank you for everyone's help.

Thankyou so much for this guide. I used it on my Sony Vaio Vgn-NS10L and it worked perfectly and the only thing I had to reinstall was the pointing tool for the mouse pad. So far all the keyboard functions work perfectly. Wireless is perfect so now you know it works for the newest sony too. Well done you.

I need to know if I found the correct recovery file (noted in the instructions as "Launch.exe"). I have a new AW-190 and I am unable to find a file with that exact name; I understand it could have a different name though. From what I gathered from this thread, it is the .exe file that initiates the recovery software correct? Within my directory: "C:\Program Files\Sony" I have a folder named "VAIO Recovery". In it there is a file named "VAIORecv.exe" that, when clicked, opens the VAIO recovery app that will allow me to check the boxes of the software I would like to install. AOL, Napster, Roxio..etc are on that list. Is the folder "VAIO Rcovery" the correct directory in which to copy (including sub-folders)? Thank you.

Successfully completed on model AW. Everything went GREAT! The file to copy (with parent directory) and kill during "F10" process is called: "VAIORecv.exe" (this is the same as the file mentioned in the instructions as "Launch.exe"). it is located here:
    C:\Program Files\Sony\Sony Recovery.
I did not bother to note all the CPU usage, memory, and hard drive savings but all I was after was getting rid of all that bloat and IT WORKED :)
    Thanx to everyone.

I just tried this with an NS Series and everything seems good. There was nothing I needed to reinstall and bloatware is gone. I haven't found any negative performance issues. Startup/Shut down and general performance is noticeably faster. I went from running about 80 processes down to 50. Its great.

The "Launcher.exe" is called "VAIORecv" on my computer. (Program Files > Sony > VAIO Recovery) If you start it up after you do the semi-clean install, it gives you the option to reinstall any of the factory installed programs you want, so if you want any of those programs, you can easily reinstall them.

I was a little bummed and having buyers remorse with this computer because it was actually slower than my 8 year old Dell Dimension Desktop with 128 mb of ram and a clean install of Windows 2K. I feel much better about it now.

Just a little fun fact, my Dell with the clean install runs with only 18 processes. How's that for progress?

I'd like to try this with my computer, but I've had it for a while and thus have lots of data. I have two hard drives and was wondering if the semi-clean will wipe BOTH drives or just the C drive.

I'm interested in giving this a try, I'm not an 'advanced user' but it looks pretty straightforward. I don't think I NEED to do this (my computer runs just fine to accommodate my needs) but I'd like to try. some silly novice questions before I do:

should i not do this on my computer if it's not new? (eg i've already installed some programs i purchased that did not come with it)

i made the recovery discs when i bought the computer, and i copied the vaio recovery folder with VAIORecv.exe file in it to DVD. ready for step 3, i assumed. but.. on a vaio NS series, is F10 the key to for step 3? I ask because hit F10 when i restarted my computer, but didn't get as far as step 4 - my computer didn't begin to reformat and install windows. i was given the option to enter or exit boot menu (i think - i can't remember exactly what it said). is there something else i need to do to "activate recovery partition?"

this was the point at which I decided i didn't know nearly enough about what i was doing and came to this forum.

if this is just too much to explain to a novice, i suppose I shouldn't be doing it! but I was just wondering if i'm just making a silly mistake, because the rest of the steps in the clean-install instructions seem pretty straightforward. (but maybe they're not?) any advice would be appreciated.

    To markxiong:

I had the same exact problem you did with "cannot find BOOTMGR". The fix was to go into the BIOS (I can't remember if it's F1 or F2, I just hit both repeatedly on boot), and change your Boot Order so that the Internal Hard Drive comes first in the boot order. Then reboot and hit F10. (I had messed with my boot order before to try and put Linux on a bootable USB drive.)

If you haven't deleted your D: partition on the primary drive it should start up the Vaio Recovery utility from there. Hope this helps!

Something else, if you do have problems, if you've got another boot up disk somewhere (I've got Norton Ghost 12 laying around), if it'll let you out to a command prompt you can go check and see if that drive has a file called BOOTMGR in the root, it should. Otherwise I assume you'd need a set of Recovery Discs sent to you at that point from Sony.

Thank you very much for this tutorial!
Also thanks to MetalMike for the info. about VAIORecv.exe

    Before:
84 processes running, 245 of 287 GB, Physical Memory 42%.

    Immediately after restore:
57 processes running, 265 of 287 GB, Physical Memory 24%.

    Notes:
    - I ran into the error too with Windows Defender when I first logged on. This only happened once also and after the reboot the error went away.
    - screwed-up and didn't copy the WHOLE "Vaio Recovery" folder I just copied the FILE "VAIORecv.exe". But fortunately I made Recovery Discs and was able the install the "Vaio Recovery" folder back to it's proper place from the Recovery Disc by just installing "VAIO Recovery Center Shortcut and Readme" program, from the "Reinstall Programs or Drivers" menu and all the Recovery files were installed back where they belong. Long story short, copy the WHOLE "Vaio Recovery" folder, and you won't have to worry about this at all.
