    Hi,

I have searched for memory for my Vaio VPC-Z12GGX/X.
I want to go from 4GB to 8GB.

I am not sure between the two because of these particular specs:

    Part #: CT1894591 • DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.5V •

    Part #: CT1894583 • DDR3 PC3-10600 • CL=9 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1333 • 1.5V

Computer memory upgrades for Sony VAIO VPCZ12GGX Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com

Question: How do I determine which will work or does it matter?

Thanks in advance for your time,

    M

They will both work, the processor in the Z can only handle RAM at 1066mhz, so even if you buy the one with 1333mhz, it will automatically downclock to 1066. They will both perform the same in the end, but the first one should be cheaper and has a lesser resale value.

The Vaio Z runs at 1066 MHz max (that's the DDR3-1066), which means the 1333 MHz RAM will slow down to 1066 MHz and the timing (CL) will be 7.

    1066 / 1333 * CL9 = CL~7.

In any case, any DDR3 RAM NON-ECC is fine.

here's a cheap one from Amazon:

    Amazon.com: Crucial Technology CT51264BC1067 4 GB 204-pin SODIMM DDR3 PC3-8500 CL=7 Unbuffered NON-ECC DDR3-1066 1.5V 512Meg x 64 Memory: Electronics

Go under 24 new from $34.99 and you can find one from Amazon for $34.99 :)

found that off Slickdeals. DDR3 is cheap nowadays

    Thanks so much.

Not only the answer I needed but now I understand.

I am curious, if it can only handle Ram at 1066 then why is 1333 available for the Z? Its for a different Z model?

The website your looking at probably lists all the RAM's that are compatible with the Z, not necessarily designed for the Z. DDR3 RAM will work with any notebook that supports DDR3, so those RAM's aren't available exclusively for the Z, they were made for notebooks in general. A quad core processor is required to use RAM at 1333mhz and the Vaio Z only comes with dual-core options.

    Cool.

So the memory is on the way.

Is there anything I should do prior to putting memory in?

    Bios upgrade or ?

I was reading that there is a way to maybe get more usuage ie. 6gb out of 8gb instead of less than 6gb?

I dont understand that completely so any info/explanations would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks
    M

Nope, nothing. You're running 64-bit windows, so just plug and play. (make sure you have computer off first i guess :p but i'm sure that goes without saying)
