I have an FS742/w -- the keyboard works perfectly, it's just that the keys are super-dirty from finger oil/dirt. I'm going to buy a cooskin off ebay to keep the keyboard clean once I get it cleaned, but... how do I clean it?

I use monster screencleaner for the screen -- could this be used on the keys?

I've searched, but the only responses I've seen are for keyboards that aren't functioning due to dirt in/under them.

    Thanks for any help!

get a can of compress air and spray it over your keyboard

    if that doesn't work

you can always take apart your laptop and the keyboard will come right off.

Thanks for the info -- you misunderstood my post. :) There's nothing under the keys and the keyboard works perfectly. The problem is the dirty/finger oils that have left deposits on the tops of the keys. Compressed air ain't gonna do it. It needs something like alcohol solution, etc. I just wanted to know if there was a recommended technique and/or product (and what to NOT do).

Well, I always used a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol or a small bit of windex to scrub the keys down. It takes a while but it's doable.

Don't pour liquid directly on the keys, btw. I've been in support for years and every time I hear this question I am reminded of the guy who put his laptop in the dishwasher...

or use a soft dampened cloth, like really lighty damp, when your computer is off, scrub away, should work.

I could use the microfiber cloth that came with the monster screen cleaner. Or the q-tips. Good call about not pouring the liquid. :)

    Thanks for the help!

I wasn't gonna pour it, I was gonna dunk the laptop. Some people take a rubber ducky in the bathtub, I like my Vaio.

Pour liquid nitrogen. That would instantaneously solidify all the gooy dirt and you can shake them off like frozen ice.

It works well on your LCD screen too.

    "Scrub Away" won't do.

Be careful not to catch the edge of any keys with the cloth! it'll pull the keys off.

I just take off my keyboards and soak and scrub them in the sink then I let them dry off with a heatsource and let them sit for a few days and I plug it back in and it works :)

rubbing alcohol and q-tips worked like a charm. surprising how easily it cleaned the dirt.
