Yep. I committed by trusting a bunch of perfect strangers. :)

I start a new contract Tuesday, any fat finger errors would of had me buying a new machine today!

Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V is enabled and working fine!

How is Hyper-V compared against VMware workstation 6.5? I can't find Hyper-V role for my Server 08, guess I've installed the version /WO HV...

Hyper-V is normally not a good choice for desktop virtualization -- there's almost no USB support or audio support, and graphics take a HUGE performance hit, not just in 3D. (And that includes the primary OS too.)
It's most useful when you need to run multiple Windows servers on the same hardware. The paravirtualization through a special bus, with special Windows drivers, gives some nice speed benefits for IO compared to many other VMs.

if you are running Securable from a 32 bit OS (program does not work on 64bit environment) and it reports VT as locked on, then it means VT is enabled on your laptop.

I have only used the Enterprise Version of WS2008 so I don't have to worry about what features I didn't get out of the box. I use Hyper V because it comes with WS2008 and last time I checked VM Ware isn't free. I also use Virtual Box for my own personal OS installs like a place to check out sites I may not trust or for software I may not like. VM's are throw away or you simply don't commit the changes.

I have never needed USB support for any VM nor full blown 3D, not sure why anyone would need 3D in a VM? I have a VM with just WS2008 on it, then I use differentiating disks for installation of SQL Server on one server, SharePoint 2007 or Dynamics CRM.

FYI the next cool thing I want to install, when I can is creating bootable VM's, which is supported in WS2008 and Windows 7.

On the Z, both card readers, the fingerprint sensor, the camera and even the touchpad are all USB devices.

Why would one need 3d in a VM? To play older games that just wont work on the newer microsoft OSes, of course! ;)

My Point, I run a dual boot with Vista for all of that. I don't need those things when I am booting into Windows Server 2008.

The former is, obviously, the status. The latter (locked) means that user level software cannot change the status, you can only do it in BIOS or in operating system kernel or, in case of Windows, HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer). That is it requires "privileged" access to hardware/CPU. The process hence is to unlock, change status, and lock again (optional).

For your information, before I enabled VT I ran Securable and it says YES. I tried running XP mode on Win7 and it complains about no VT.

I can now run XP mode on Win7 after enabling VT (method as discussed at the start of this thread). However, I did not run Securable again as I'm on Win7 x64 and I'd assume it would just say YES again since the code does not run on a 64bit OS.

To make it clear, VT is needed to run 2 OS at the same time, right? OK if you don't need that, are there other useful tweakes after unlocking advanced BIOS through EFI?

There are a lot of other settings after you enabled the advanced configuration for your EFI. A few examples being thermal control, cpu fan speed, etc. But I dont recommend touching those lest you can't get back to the default configuration.

    Hi,

I have a question for all that have used the EFI tool.

Is there an option there to enable the use of 2 external monitors on the Z (1 on hdmi and the other vga)?

I'm currently tring to use 2x external monitors at the same time (possibly a third one, the notebook monitor) and when i have them connected the i can only choose the options of main+vga or main+hdmi.

Can anyone give any information on this?

To the admins: I'm sorry for posting on the wrong section but i can only think of a bios limitation on the simultaneous use of the ports.

For my Z just follow the instruction in this post then you will get extra bios menu to enable the VT.

For my TT (to go), I download the bios update from e-support EU >> R2021M4

Both machines work well on Window 7 Ultimate 64 bit with window XP mode..

    Thanks

Found out that there is already a official bios update that enables VT support.

I've already installed, enbled the option and tested, but it seems that vmware becomes slower than before...
