I've encountered what look like a five-point version of the world-standard Phillips screws (+) - anyone know how i can remove these safely? Any known tools out there for them?

Where are you seeing these? I've opened my C1V several times and I don't recall encountering anything other than Philips screw heads.

I encountered 5 Philips screws under the main bottom of the case, then took out the keyboard, and the four screws to remove (including the left-hinge screw) are a five-way Philips rather than traditional 4-way (plus-sign) screws...

That's odd. I just popped mine open and all of those are standard Philips screws.

As you can see the screws are both definitely philips; difference being the outer-case screws are standard 4-way philips and the ones i found inside are 5-way philips...

    Any ideas?

Only that someone must have been in there before you. I've owned 3 C1s and opened each; never have I seen those screws.
