What are some good programs that I could install so I could track my computer if it were ever stolen/Lost?

I got my Vaio engraved with my name and phone number.

Who's gonna want a brand new top of the line computer with my name on it...literally.

On the serious side though, you can always get a kensington notebook lock as well as check out lojack for notebooks

Well I don't think the person would care. They aren't going to like steal it quickly then notice your name and then take the time to return it. If they are scared or annoyed by it having a name and number on it, they will sell it on the streets or something.\

    my best advice:

buy a laptop lock, keep your room/house locked when you're out. If you have it with you, keep it in the trunk of your car and lock the trunk so that even if somebody got into your car they'd need the key to open the trunk. keep it in a laptop backpack (to me, seeing a briefcase or nice case obviously means that person has something small and expensive in there).

and yes, a GPS or something like lo jack would be good if you really want that extra protection.

I don't want to get a SONY SR is because I'm afraid of getting it stolen so I might buy a SONY NR.

or take care as not to show it off, and minmize the fact you have a laptop, don't always carry it around if you don't have to, if you do, don't mention you have a laptop, don't carry a laptop bag, perhaps use a packback to carry it around.

Maybe use your laptop very casually as well.
If you don't treat it like something expensive people may underestimate its value if they don't know it.

E.g. SZ -> how many people could tell you its price just like that on the street??
The same will aplly to even newer laptops.

Duke's point about keeping it in the boot/trunk of your car is important as usually laptops are only insured (if you have them insured) if they are stored in a locked boot.
