For those looking for SSDs, the OCZ 100GB and 250GB are being cleared out by various retailers for $50-55 and $110 respectively. I know, an unrealistic 84% off MSRP. Crazy. The 100GB one has the sandforce controller and is in the upper 200MB/sec performance range. Buy.com and Amazon blew them out 2 days ago. A smaller vendor blew out 40 or so this morning. So keep an eye out. Since this is so widespread and the prices are pretty much identical across vendors, the pricing is most likely set by the distributor they all share.

Thanks for those links travfar, I got one of each! The prices jumped up shortly after I ordered so I wonder if the original prices were a mistake or not- the deals sure seemed too good to be true.

With the ones from these little vendors, who knows? The ones that buy.com sold on 4/1 have already shipped. So the price from the distributor is good, now it's a question of stock. All these are dropped shipped from the distributor. The ones on buy.com got sold first thus they got shipped first.

Has anyone tried OCZ Vertex 2 SATA II 1.8" SSD on Vaio Z?

    @AGabi:

    I just finished updating my vaio Z12 from an intel x25 G2 (80gb) to a OCZ Vertex2 (240Gb).

I know you were asking for the 1.8" results, but I think mine can be helpful as well, it's the same computer, just with windows updates and fresh install:

    PcMark Vantage x64 Vertex2/Intel x25:
    PcMarks: 11812/11158

Switched out my stock toshiba raid for single c300, some improvement, since my stock raid's performance plummeted after a few months of use :D

first 2 images - bechnmarks with new c300, the last image is the stock raid when I got the notebook... it was much worse when I benched it last night, and it couldn't even finish the random 4k test under AS SSD  The last CDM result with stock raid, it lost about 100mb sequential write speed and the rest were also much slower... DOn't have the screenshot, didn't save it :p

I'm dissapointed that Crucial doesn't have a TRIM utility, even though I'm using Win7, it doesn't always work - on my Intel G2, performance dropped if I didn't run Intel Toolbox every once in a while, win7 too... go figure

PS Is there any way to detach one of the stock ssds and stick it in as an additional storage?

Today I installed two C300 (128 and 256Gb) instead 2x64 Samsung. Before formatting ssd's I set IDE mode and flashed them to latest FW 0007. It is available with BIOS Hack.

Would you mind posting the link to that BIOS hack? I have a c300 as well, I tried to upgrade it and couldn't. I'm really interested in this as I don't want to take the hard disk outside the laptop in order to do so. :(

Why are you worried about heat? What did you place between the drives? I only used black eletrical tape :\ Haven't had a problem in 9 months. :D

Our 128's seem identical in performance, i'm still on fw002 though, have you noticed anything different in 007?

I worried cos C300 has a thermal sheets in original box. I put a pieces of antistatic bag between drives and under upper drive.
Indeed there is no different in performance but fw006 has improved TRIM and GC

Hey guys. Sorry, probably been answered a hundred times, but I can't see it...
I have a Z13 with 2x64GB Toshibas. Do I need the connector, or can I just shove a caseless SSD in there since the cable is already available?

Also, anyone tried the Intel 320 yet? I would love the 300GB version installed, not sure if it can be pried open and fit.

    Thanks in advance!

You needn't the connector If 2x64GB Toshibas are installed native.

somewhat misleading. Z11 had proprietary plug, Z12/Z13 has standard mSata connector, and it's only a coincidence that with Z12/Z13 Sony switched to Toshibas. For all we know, some Z11 might have come with Toshiba SSDs as well.

I don't think there's Intel 320 in 1.8" factor (publicly) available, they are all 2.5" so they won't fit in the place for the existing SSD Raid, they will have to into the optical drive bay instead (with a bay adapter)

I keep being told that Crystaldiskmark is totally inconsistent and better to use ATTO, but like the WEI, it's hard to ignore comparative CDM results. I have a Z13 w/64+64 and I don't have the graphic saved (and don't want to run it again, not good for the SSDs, tis said), but take a look at these results compared to yours:
    Mb/s
    Mine Yours

What kind of drives did you put in? Why do you still show only 128GB (well, 117) if you added more SSDs? Any insights?

^Did you enable Write-Back Cache in the Intel RST console? This boosts Write performance in small writes significantly.

I have two 128gb C300's. They are not running in raid, this is single drive performance, so two seperate 128gb drives. You don't want to see my C300 raid performance :D : D :D

    Here's someone elses C300 128gb Raid0 performance

I just don't need those kind of numbers on my Z and Beaups convinced me that it's not worth the risk inherent to any Raid0 setup, esp when a single drive is already so fast :D

I don't think that ordering from any of those retailers qualifies as " without problems". Let me know when any major retailers such as Amazon or Newegg have them in stock. If you are willing to buy from those guys, I have a Brooklyn bridge on sale just for you :D

Says you... Besides, they are OOS, so even if they are legit, they are OOS, and whatshisname russian guy is still plain wrong stating it's easy to obtain 1.8" Intel 320s.

    Hi

    I have VPCZ11X9e and VPCZ12m9e.

The first one has 1 ssd 128mb samsung MMCRE28GQDXP,

second 2 ssd toshiba like on first post.

Model VPCZ11X9e I want to sell to buy something new, but I'm not sure which configuration is better. I have idea to change disk and put samsung to VPCZ12m9e instead two toshiba. Is this will fit?

This is 60 pin connector of VPCZ11X9e - is it the same like vpcz12 ?

Excellent thread, really enjoyed reading it. Would upgrade the 64GBx2 if I hadn't already shoved a 1TB HDD into optical bay. Good work to OP though :)

    Replace your 64x2 with 256x2 C300's and your 1TB HDD w/a 2.5" 600gb intel 320 and you'll have 1.1TB of SSD love! :D :D

I may do your C300 x2 swap though. So tempting...

I'm getting 2 x C300 256 GB. Is the only way to see one hard drive with 512 GB is to setup raid 0? Whats the drawback of raid 0? No Trim?
Once I connect these two does the laptop automatically see both of them as one drive when I boot it up?

Drawback is lack of trim and twice the risk of failure.

You need to enable showing the intel raid screen in bios then reboot and hit control-I when the intel rapid storage screen comes up after post. In there you will create a new raid 0 array. Then boot to your windows installation disc and away you go...

Okay thanks. I don't need the extra speed boost from raid 0 array. However, is there a way to make it look like 1 drive and still allow garbage control?

    Does anyone think 2 * C300 1.8" 256 GB for 560 or 280 each is a good deal?

Ebay. Used for 3 months. Theres 4 more. :D Go go! Comes with a 2.5 inch enclosure also. Comes with his own 30 day warranty since he owns a store. hes selling it in the NBR marketplace but buy it off him on ebay so you can get a squaretrade warranty also.

I'm in a limbo between setting up my 2* c300 SSDs in raid0 or setting them as two drives. I would like the drives to be seen as one but is the only option raid 0? Is the failure rate that much higher? I don't care for the extra speed boost, but just would like to deal with 1 hard drive. Thanks

If he were to set these up in the raid like Sony has the stock drives, how much of a speed boost and advantages is he gaining? Thinking about doing this to a friend's Z.
