Hi everybody,
After reading the Vaio FE reviews on this forum and seeing it for myself, I was stunned by the screen of these laptops. It was just brighter than anything I have seen so far. However, how would you really consider the screen? My friend who had a HP laptop told me that FE's screens are ok, but HP screen are more beautiful, "HP screens are gorgeous!", he told me.
I'm considering a FE. However, his comments really pull me back, hmm.
Oh, one more thing, I'm just thinking... Merom chips are scheduled to be relesed next month or so, after its desktop counterpart. How much will those cost? I hate to think when I buy the FE now, 2 months later other laptops with better specs and same price emerge, spoiling my purchase decision.

Your friend's right. The HP Ultra BrightView screens are a lot better than Sony's Xbrite hi-color. HP brags how their Ultra BrightView is "plasma-like"
The BEST LCD on laptops are in Fujitsus. ASUS's screens are nice too. Toshiba screens are excellent as well. Apple's screens are great too. For dells, you'll have to depend on luck on whether u'll get a nice screen or a poor screen.
I wouldn't get the Sony FE just for the screen. There's nothing special about the screen at all, other than it's "ok." It's decent, but FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR from best. The FE does, however, have a Nvidia Geforce 7600 go graphics card, but ASUS and Apples all have X1600's, which kill the 7600. Most of the high-end 15.4" lcds have X1600s. -
To me, the FE screen is the best. I've been going around many shops hunting for a notebook, and I found the FE screen superior to all the others, though fujitsu came close.
It's not only the brightness, but also the great viewing angles, and even though it is a glossy screen, it has less reflection and glare compared to the rest. So I like it alot. The worst screens are the Asus ones, hands down.
However, I agree with maomanmaman that I wouldn't get the sony FE due to its poorer specs, in particular the 128mb gpu, as well as the 533mhz ram. There are better 15.4" notebooks at this price range, with a good enough screen.
I'm actually facing the same problem as you. My solution is to try and fix this old laptop I have, use it for 2 months, and then get a core2duo. The wait is worth it! -
Thanks guys for your comments...
So, what are your recommendations? I like to watch a lot of movies and possibly some HD contents, plus I would like to play some game, FEAR for example. I also tweak around with video cameras and photos. I thought the Vaio FE would be enough for my needs. After all, it's cool running (low performance though.) Anything around or equal the Vaio FE will be fine.
Hmm, I've never seen a Fujitsu before, but they are even more expensive than Vaios. And I think they are rather 'copiest' than being original.
I'm in Australia, hence Vaio FE has only 2 options. All have webcams, 256MB GPU of 7400. But 1 with 1.86Ghz and the other with 2 Ghz and a 80GB and a 100GB respectively.
This unfortunately, is going to be my first notebook, really. I need advice, i need advice, bring them all in, guys! Thanks beyond every ways. -
I like the LG S1, but I don't know if they sell it in Australia...
Best you answer the "What should I buy FAQ" at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=29271 and post it at the "What notebook should I buy?" section.
That will allow you to solicit advice specific to your needs and your location. -
surefire_for_all, i dont understand what you mean by "copiest". I use a fujitsu laptop, and let me tell you guys, I am the happiest guy with this laptop. They have amazing screens, with amazing resolutions. I have been using my laptop for 3-4yrs now, and I have had one problem after 2.5yrs, and the customer service, is by far the best, you will be talking to someone within minutes, and get it all sorted out. So, if you can afford a Fujitsu, go with it, and Sony FE is also good, despite some flaws, its a great stylish laptop with good enough features for moderate gaming. I dont like people saying, its not top of the line, not the best graphics card, for the amount of computer usage that I do, I am happy with this. Unless, you make your own music, graphic desigining, or something, u will be happy with this. Fear should run fine on FE.

If you want the absolute best screen in a notebook, you can't go wrong with the Fujitsu N series. I've seen them in store at an out-of-town computer shop and am blown away at the brightness, sheer brilliance, and colour saturation. I've seen some Dell, HP, VAIO screens (FE, FS, S, TX, SZ series) and nothing compares.

The Fujitsu N series w/ Enhanced Crystalview are the best.
They are over 470cd/m2 and will totally own the Xbrite hi color.
I dont know why vaio hi color has the best screen. i've seen it at a store and it gets owned by a fujitsu next to it.
But Fujitsus ARE HEAVY, due to the Mg alloy. (17 inch = 10lb, 15.4"=7-8lb)
i've never seen asus screens, but i bet they're great.
HP has Ultra BrightView on 17 inch models, and they're also excellent. Toshiba's TruBrite are brighter too. But even with that, Fujitsu LCD = #1 -
Hi SureFire,
I would second Loop's advice. Take a look at the FAQ first.
Otherwise, you will be overwhelmed with our differing responses and suggestions. (Which are all good, just with different priorities.)
If you're in Australia, the Fujitsus are going to cost a hell lot for you. (So are the Sony VAIOs...)
Plan your budget first. How much are you willing to spend and how much are you willing to move it around? Then start going with what's important.
Portability?
Graphics?
Looks?
Weight?
Display?
You'd be able to cut down on the options better this way.
Best of luck in your search.
By the way, I do believe that the HPs would be cheaper in Australia compared to the Japanese brands.
How would you rate the FE's screen?
