Could someone please let us know how loud the fan is (eg in VPC-Z116GX, Core i5), when the computer is idle, or just browsing, using word, etc ? Is it audible at all times ?

I currently own a Sony Vaio VGN-SR29VN (13", P8600), the fan is always working in similar conditions, even at low levels, which i find disturbing.

I'd hope the VPC-Z116GX is quieter...

    Thnx

    Hi, Beh0lder!

Not to be a complete goofball in response, but depending on the age of your machine the answer might be as simple as giving the machine a quick blow---! I kid you not, I've taken several of my older Vaios, including most recently an SZ-160 just three days ago, from the point where the fan ran noisily and continuously, to primarily wonderful silence. Again, I am serious. Clean off the back of your machine if you're concerned, take a huge breath, wrap your mouth around the machine's rear vent, and exhale like crazy in one sharp blow.

Sounds bizarre, I realize, but I've repeated this multiple times to great, and immediate effect (you're in reality cleaning accumulated dust/crud buildup from the CPU heatsink).

    FYI!

I've got the z115. Have not done much with it.
The fan is almost non-audible when doing websurfing and photo viewing. However, with VAIO Media Plus running the fan noise is very loud, much louder than the SZ. So having just come from the SZ model, I'm happy with the new z's low fan noise level.

Hi... I have a vaio VGN-FW21E , well my fan is always audible, also when i'm just surfing the web. I thought if i clean it from dust it would be more silent, but i was wrong, well it's not the first time i hear that vaio's fan is loud!! when i just watch a video on youtube it becomes louder. Don't know what to do, it's annoyig hearing always the fan wroking!!

Is that good? I'm not familiar with the Z51.

I'd like to be able to have a dozen windows open on integrated graphics and have the fan almost silent in a quiet room. Is this realistic on the new Z? I have a CW right now that I like quite a bit but the fan noise is always audible even when I underclock the NVIDIA graphics (no integrated graphics on the CW).

Compared to my Macbook Pro 2007 15" my new i5 Z sounds slightly more mechanical at idle, yet not necessarily louder. With the MBP there is only a whoosh of air, but with the Z I hear the motor faintly. Mind you this is audible when your ear is practically to the keyboard on both units. So as far as web surfing, etc the thing is very quiet in my opinion.

Now, while playing Oblivion on the MBP there is a considerably louder, obvious whoosh. I am downloading Oblivion onto the Z right now and will get back to you on the results.

As the Oblivion CD is installing there is a slight whirring hum, almost like fan noise, but hardly annoying at all. CD installation is a pretty quiet affair; I believe quieter than the MBP.

I have the Metal Mosaic Z purchased from the Sonystyle Store in Aventura, Florida. Just got it today. Stay tuned.

OK, very preliminary observations; the Z and the MBP running Oblivion simultaneously; the MBP is definitely louder. The Z is really not loud with the game running so far. I think it is quieter compared to most my past laptops. I would not feel embarrassed at all using it in a library even in a gaming mode.

Thank you. That is very helpful. I just want it quiet while I'm reading on the web in silence. If I'm playing a game it can be as loud as it wants to be :)
