Is there much improvment with a 7200 speed drive compared to the new hybrid drives?

Hybrid HDDs haven't really caught on as a widespread technology b/c benchmarks have shown that while costs are higher, performance increases are marginal (like Intel's Robson technology). It really is a smarter buy to just get a regular 7200RPM drive.

Hybird drive should give you a better performance in boot time / OS performance since it frequently accessed data are stored on flash memory. However, this does not help the transfer time on large files.

If you work with large files most of the time, 7200rpm will be a better choice. It has better sustained transfer rate.
