    Hi guys.
I got this new laptop for few days now and I am so damn disappointed
and feel bad about all this. It was an expensive purchase for me and I
really regret the money I spend :(

First of all it takes a damn long time to boot and when it dose finally
the hard disk activity dose not stop for at least 3 to 5 minutes after!
I just wonder what the hell its doing! I am already turned off by this
and already want to stop using the damn thing!

I removed a lot and lot of junk and I think that when you pay 2000$
laptop you don't deserve to be target for so much junk and publicity!
    SONY YOU SUCK!

This damn thing is not able to play even the old games that run with
my 3 years old PC! Even fifa and NFS Most wanted can't be run even
with medium quality! Grrrrr writing this makes me think how could I
    loose 2000$ that easy :(

I connected it to my tv (s-video out) and I get black and white picture!!!
Why?!! no Idea and the play back of avi files is not as smooth as in my
Old desktop pc! When seeking I get freeze and Oh the sound quality simply
sucks. I have never heard such absence for bass! No one could even do
a bass elimination like this on purpose!

After I spent few days ( YES I SWEAR FEW DAYS) deleting the junk that
I got with this laptop I still find myself with a damn slow machine that takes
too long for me to boot and be ready and still not capable of running any
game or movie the way a normal desktop with old prescot cpu!

My old 6600GT NVidia beats the **** out of the sony 8400GT Card!
Oh and the battery, its eaten in no time! watch a movie and you
are out of power after 3/4 of the film!

    Is this your first laptop?
    • Laptops aren't particularly known for great bass.
    • You probably haven't removed startup entries and services slowing your computer down. Check my signature.
    • That's not terrible for battery life. It could be better, but it could be a lot worse.
    • If you still hate it so much, return it.

Waaahhhh. If you want to speed up your computer and get rid of most of the junk within a couple of hours, use Ninja's sig. And most laptops with dedicated GPU's won't make it through a full movie on the battery.

sorry dude, the fz has a obscene amount of bloatware and sony does not use the same 8400 gt in all FZ laptops. Maybe u got the 64 mb dedicated one, guess u got unlucky.

have you tried changing any power settings while on battery?

you're probably using it with maximum performance and that drains battery life real fast. change the settings while on battery and you should be able to watch an entire movie atleast

and why dont you connect it to your tv with vga? or dvi? or hdmi?

    1. Vista takes forever on many systems to boot and shut down
    2. Sony gets paid for including the bloatware.
    3. Most notebooks aren't gaming machines, especially Sonys
    4. You need another s-video cable. I don't care if the one you have works with another device.

    Thanks for your replies guys.
Please don't get angry at me as I am already angry at myself! :)
Anyway I went the NinjaNoodles way and did a semi clean install
that went all ok and smooth. Remove all unwanted junk and startup
and now I have not yet installed even one software. So this should be
the best possible experience for me!

    Now here is my question:

When I boot to windows it takes a damn long time of hard disk activity
before the system actualy stops and become ready!
How can I identify what is doing this ?!

How long yours take for being ready to use?!

I start wondering if mine has a problem that Others don;t have!

Ok here is detailed info so some of you can maybe tell me if its normal:

I turn on the laptop and wait for the VAIO screen and start from there:

1-From the VAIO boot screen till entering windows vista (this is after the welcome and were I am actualy totaly in vista) it takes exactly 50 seconds.

This dose not seem that bad!

2- But now I watch the Hard disk led activity that is working at max and non stop and from when windows starts till the hdd led activity stops it takes exactly 3minuts and 40 seconds!
    Isn't this weird!?
On my desktop it takes about 25 secs!

a lot of times the hard drive is indexing things. the task scheduler is almost always doing something in vista. this is why vista isnt particularly the best at battery life compared to XP.

download a program called TweakVista, it is very powerful and can turn off a lot of junk in services you dont need. it also has a page relating to how fast your computer starts up.

my time to desktop is usually around 54 seconds with the whole startup process taking just under two minutes.

How do you find out how much memory is there on 8400GT. I guess its made by nvidia, so how can sony change that?

I dunno, could it be superfetch? I haven't really monitored mine, but I don't think it takes over three minutes.

Sony could have as much memory put on their gpu's as they want, same with any other company. What model do you have?

most of your issues are those that can (at least imho) easily solved by formatting and reinstalling Vista.

I don't have the FZ180, but I had the 190 and getting rid of Sony's crapware helped alot in the boot up department. Sound..well I actually thought the FZ was very good (for a laptop). I don't know if there is any tutorials on here for it, but if you're into XP, boot up times improve by alot as well, I recently reinstalled for my other vaio (an SZ) XP and am loving it much more than Vista.

battery life can't be helped, unfortunately. the battery life sucks.

I finally finished installing winxp in dual boot mode and installed all drivers for it.
WHAT A DIFFERENTS! The speed is incomparable with vista! I tried to run few games and they were running MUCH better and smoother! (Although still not impressive)

All my drivers installed perfect and working :)
My ONLY problem is that I can't get FN keys (F5 & F6) brightness to work!
Any Idea how to fix this! ?

Also I figured out the question I must ask and get an answer to is:

How to configure Vista for best run with my laptop.
Please advise me on every possible way to make vista better and
stop it run junks that are not needed!

As I said I have done the Semi clean install using the recovery + Ctrl-alt-del
    at program installation.
I have removed all junks and non of the sony trial softwares are installed.

Here is a list of what I left :
Please tell me if I should/can remove any or should add anything :

    Alps pointing device for VAIO
    Java SE Runtime Environment
    Microsoft SQL Server Native Client
Sonic stage mastering studio audio filter
    Sony utilities dll
    Sony video shared library
    VAIO av mode luncher
    VAIO camera capture utility
    VAIO camera utility
    VAIO central
    VAIO event service
    VAIO help and support
    VAIO OOBE
    VAIO Photo 2007
    VAIO Power Managment
    VAIO service utility
    VAIO Update 3
    Wireless switch setting utility

This is the new prefetch in vista now called superprefetch, as the name suggests its gathers all the regular files that you tend to use, such as programs and loads this into memory so that when you start a program it should start up really quickly.

This is why your HDD is spinning like mad at startup, you can turn this feature off, as I have, by going into services and disabling the superprefetch service from autostarting. This does have a negative effect though, programs do take a lot longer to start up, so the choice is up to you.
