So I have my sz360 in a tight fit zipper sleeve and in my backpack and it was powered on in class at 6pm and we left class at 6:30 to head to the work out room all I did was hit start shut down and closed lid... and it usually turns off as its in my backpack....well I did alot of running around after school and got home at 9:30pm and took laptop out of back pack then zipper casing and it felt like it was on fire and was HOT! I didnt know what was going on and i opened the lid and screen was still on and said "would you like to end _____ program before shutting off" or something like that and i hit yes and it turned off.

hope this didnt screw it up or anything :(

OMG same thing happen to me but instead I press Hibernate.

I press Hibernate, put into zipper sleeve and went home. Usually I keep my bag half open so I can have easy access to cell, keys and bus pass, but that day it was raining so I CLOSE MY FREAKEN zipper (always keep it half open).

After 1 hour ride from school, my S2110 turn into a OVEN! I took the battery out and let it cool down a bit. Then I scan my harddrive for bad sector. So far my Fujitsu is still running!

I never understand why Hibernate only works half the time. I always get this message something like "API lalalalala memory". Whats up with that? Even SZ with 2gb ram give me that stupid API lalalala message. Arghhhhhhh

Thats why I always make sure to wait and see all the lights (bluetooth and LED) go out.

I hate when processes refuse to shut down automatic on Shutdown.

I do that a lot with my Desktop...I go to shut down, turn off the monitor leave the room, and come back a few hours only to find a "Not responding" or "This program needs to shut down" type of error with the computer still on.

No it won't hurt the computer. I have an Asus that does not shut down properly when the lid is closed. And since I'm often in a hurry, I've closed it many times while creating a little sauna in my bag, no problems whatsoever.

I would disable hibernate if I was you. Hibernation is more trouble than it's worth.

Windows tends to have glitches with hibernate. But it just sounds like you ran into an unfortunate shutdown error this time.

Your notebook should be fine though. Make sure to see it power off in the future.

The same thing happened to me yesterday.
I closed my laptop as usual, put it into its sleeve and went back home in a hurry.
Got home, the laptop didn't go to sleep, and it was **** hot.
This has happened many many times in the past.

Except that this time, after a while I got a BSOD, rebooted the laptop and I got the dreadful message:
    Insert boot disk.

Rebooted again, and suddenly the hard drive starts to make an awful noise: loud click click...

I rebooted, my Windows XP partition would refuse to boot.
Then I booted the Vista partition, it did boot.

I tried to copy my files to an external disk, but the laptop would freeze every 5 minutes or so...

I tried copying my files using the Fedora Core 5 DVD, but Linux wouldn't even recognize the disk controller :( (I had no problem installing linux on this machine in the past)...

Fed up, the next day I went to an Apple store, they had a remaining macbook pro with a 160GB HD from an order canceled by a customer.
It wasn't a glossy screen but I didn't want to wait (over 2 weeks wait here in Oz). And I took it.

I'm almost done recovering all my files after two full days.
The apple laptop is much heavier but I guess I'll get used to it after a while.

The Sony is the best laptop form-factor wise but the build quality is terrible.
The key labels are wearing off on most of my keys, the plastic edge move and if you grab the laptop from the side, chances are they will clip out , and the paint wears off at each corner.
And Windows XP is just the worse OS ; how can anybody compromise that when you turn it off, it's the luck of the draw for your laptop to actually turn off ? constant weird irrational behaviour, I've had enough.

Need to find a new HD for my SZ160, hopefully it's just the HD, so I can resell it. Unfortunately I bought the SZ in the US, and Sony Australia doesn't want to hear about this laptop...

Shutdown and hibernate are SUPPOSED to work in Vista. They seemed to when I was running the RC's on mine.

does Hibernate use up all 2 GB of memory?

I can only Hibernate on my SZ when all my firefox, document ar close.

On my S2110, I never had to do that.

    So annoying..

Yes, it does work better in Vista.
However, in XP I get easily over 3.5 hours of battery, with Vista RTM (official release) I best I get 2-2.5hours
