My 3rd? 4th? what ever this is. Bluescreen (IRQ), a Nvidia driver stopped responding, and now a weird artifacty lockup. Yay!

I'm not sure guys.... I mean, spec and size wise this IS the laptop for me... but clearly after like 4 it isn't..... what do you guys think i should do? try again? or just say screw it and get something else?

lv2go, i tried about 4 of them and still can replicate the lockup. The sony driver I was not able to, but i think this is because i have to run the games on lower settings with the sony driver, thus not stressing as much?

i had read somewhere that sony restricts 3rd party video drivers on its vaios(Though i've never tested it). May be that's what is causing the problem.

Try underclocking both memory and core by 50 Mhz. It solved my problems.

If I'm not mistaken, the FW is already downclocked anyway. And to the above poster, yes, they do restrict drivers, but it's not for any particular reason whatsoever. Aan310, do you know what your temps are right around BSOD, or are the BSOD's completely random?

Yup, it is. I'm not saying it's a heat issue, its just that those clocks seem to make certain games unstable.

heat maxes out at like 64c, the BSOD was right out of hibernation and was unrelated to gfx i think.
As for downclocking, why whould i downclock an already downclocked card?

If it BSOD or artifacts once more it's going back. For good.

Dude. You have horrible luck... dang. :( If it maxes out at 64, then yea, you clearly have other problems if it's artifacting. Thats 4?

Yep, this one has a bad GFX card. It's driver independent (among other things).

Now, do i want a HP Envy 15 or give Sony another shot? Hmmmmm

they were reporting it dead earlier today. if it's still working, go for it. or call in. people think you might be able to talk them into giving you the deal.

If I wanted a 15", that computer would be mine. but for now, I'm focused on 17"+

well the 5830 is rated better than the 330m so that shouldn't be a problem and looking at the hp15 it shows it has 1gb.

thought from the pictures I can't tell what its made out of. i have a dm3 that has the plastic silver casing but its cheap and flaking

Funny, I'm returning the Envy 15 in favor of the Vaio Z Signature.

The 5830 is a great card...the Envy is a nice machine. It just hurt while typing a lot, and I realized that what I need as a grad student who travels a lot is supreme mobility. 3 lbs + 1080 = dream for me.

Your mileage may vary, of course. If the Z weren't around, I would most likely keep this one (though I really don't enjoy typing on this too much).

Yea, mine is quite well spec'd though at only $1300, where as a Z would be more and have a shoddier screen. Idk, we'll see.
