I didn't get teh option to not keep the 'value-added' stuff in the partition.
WTF. Why is mine so different?

IT seems i dont have a recovery partition. I had the option to insert DVD for applciation recovery, which i refused as i assumed this was for the bloatware crap.

Edit:it kept asking for dvd, i couldn't see it in start up menu, but eventually i just let it do the stuff. Since my options were nothing like those described, I wont bother trying a semi cleaninstall. At least i freed up the restore partition space (i think).

I think different models/countries must have fairly different restore disks. My menus didnt resemble the ones mention in this thread, and niehter do the programs installed. i.e. no sign of napster on my laptop. dunno what is going on. i'll just manually unistall a few, then use autoruns to stop crap from starting up i think.

This is only partly true. I know PB/HP/CPQ etc uses something we call TATTOO which actually is a string value on a hidden sector at HDD (and on Recovery Media if not Recovery partition) AND in the DMI area in BIOS. This string is configurable, but not for a Consumer themselves.

THis only applies to the WinXP/MCE on the other hand. On Vista, PB uses a PartList that is also selectable. From what I've seen it is "software packages" and "driver packages".

The reason behind both of these metods? They can use the same recovery media for a whole range of PC's, but only change the TATTOO/PartList.

I've only done PB Tattoo's, about a hundred of them over the phone (sux, takes an hour for computer newbies), and as far as our department is concerned, we do not do Tattoos on HP/CPQ/Advent etc. Thats engineers work (which I have access too anyways)

Just a bit FYI. How Sony does, I do not know, yet. I will look into it tomorrow to see if there is any good overrides/changes to escape the hell of bloatware.
