Anybody else hates Sony flat keyboard? I tried SZ, FZ and AR and all have the same problem. It's very easy to make a typo with their flat keyboard. The key is too touchy and you can easily press another key next to the one you intend to press.

Why do they have to make it flat like that? Why don't they use standard keyboard like Dell or IBM?

They make it like that because:

    a. Style - Sony is all about style; looks good

    b. Some people might like the feel better than the other standard keys, personally i prefer the flat keys

i agree with jamste in both points. I rarely find myself making typos with the sz keyboard and I personally like the feel and everything as well

I like it too - one of the reasons I buy Sony (second is display). Though I have been on a computer since 1986, I am still pretty much a "hunt-and-peck" typer and the flatter style suits me better.

I touch type, and I absolutely love the Vaio TZ keyboard. I am able to type at 120 WPM with very few errors at all.

How much different is the TZ keyboard compared to the SZ keyboard?

I've seen/used an SZ but haven't found a TZ to play with.

My situation is the opposite. I've never used a Vaio SZ before, but I own a Vaio TZ. Here are some pictures of the TZ keyboard:

From what I hear, the TZ keyboard is substantially different from any other Vaio keyboard up to date, including the one with the original design (I forgot the model number).

Personally, I love the TZ keyboard.

I can see what the OP means. It looks like it might take some getting used to a "flat" keyboard vs. a "regular" keyboard (like the one I have on my Dell).

Gazelle, thanks for the info... and the pics! I really wish that TZ were a tad more powerful -- and a wee bit less expensive. It sure is tempting, though. :)

I've seen this type of comment before about these Sony keyboards, but I'm confused... For those that "got used to it", did you then like it better than a regular keyboard? Or did you simply get accustomed to the difference?

I hope that makes sense. :)

I like the flat keyboard even more than regular keyboards. It feels good to the touch. Some touch typists complain about flat keyboards, and I think they are ridiculous. Those people are proof that no matter HOW GOOD or beautiful something is, there will ALWAYS be complainers. No matter what. Even 70 years from now, when laptops become nothing more but portable holograms that project out of our wrists, there will be complainers. Can you imagine that? "I HATE THE SONY ELECTRON HOLOGRAM SCREEN!!! TOO MUCH STATIC!!!" I think it's ridiculous that people complain that they cannot touch type on flat keyboards because I can touch type perfectly on flat keyboards. My typing speed is not handicapped or anything.

I'm typing this on an FZ keyboard and I for one agree with hendra, the flat keyboard is not my favorite. Although it's neccessary for a notebook this slim. The keys have poor push-comfort and I type slower, with more errors than on virtually every other notebook keyboard I've used. A more 3 dimensional key gives you more travel, therefore more comfort and better accuracy. That TZ keyboard however looks fantastic. Looks very similar to the keyboard on the MacBook Air, which appears to be very simple, but actually is a very well thought-out, well engineered keyboard with soft, comfortable keystrokes.
