What is going on here?
I have a couple of burned data CDs that contain important applications.
I burned these CDs using my FE about 1 week ago.
Now all of the sudden when I pop the CD in the drive -- it grinds, spins, hums, and eventually stops.
I can't get into the CD!
Yet the CD works in EVERY laptop I own: SZ, XPS, Toshiba, everything. What
the heck is going on?????
Is my drive just crappy? Sensitive? The disks have not a single scratch.
Its a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K16M.
The FE will play a stupid DVD movie though! Or burn another CD! Or burn a DVD!

have you used a lens cleaner for the fe?
if the lens is dirty then your disc must be in the best condition (ie good quality disc, good quality burn as indicated by a software scanner like nero quality scan, no fingerprints/scratches, etc) in order for your drive to read. -
I will check the lens like you suggested. Never thought of that!
But I know the CD quality is good.
And I do use Nero Professional for everything.
How much do those lens cleaners cost? -
lens cleaners are pretty cheap. can be had for definitely 20 bucks or less.
-
the dvdr in the FE is crap. mine mostly makes coasters.
-
like pukemon sad they're cheap.
i've read somewhere that you shouldn't use the "cleaning solution" that may come with the lens cleaner. so if the solution comes with it i'd advise not to use it.... unless someone here can vouch that it's ok. just the brush that is affixed onto the cd cleaner itself.
and for anybody who doesn't know about cd/dvd burn quality i'd recommend visiting this page:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
firmware updates, quality of recorder/media, etc all play into burning the perfect disc -
That Pioneer burner is a generally crappy drive. Mine doesn't (didn't? I don't know if Sony has repaired it yet) recogize blank DVDs, so I can't burn DVDs. It recognizes other DVDs though (system discs and movies)....stupid thing.

I've had the same problem on my FS about a couple months after I purchased it. Sometimes, if you eject it and then insert the disk again after a few seconds, seems to work. Also, after I did a Vaio Update on a drive, it seemed to work better than before.
-
I have always read that using those cd lens cleaners with the little brushes are TERRIBLE for the lens.
I hate hate my FE
