I just bought the AR290g from frys electronics. it was 3499.00 plus tax, came out to 3800.00, so i listed my sonysz381 on ebay for 2100.00 thats a month old. looking to recoup some of the ar290g costs.

i'm just setting it up now, but i was surprised it came with 2 free blueray movies and 1 blueray disc to copy things, maybe hats why they charge so much for it. i'm sure this beast will not be happy to go through airport security on a business trip to boston next week, feel free to ask me questions

Wow. 3.7lbs to 8.4lbs. You are going to have a workout at the airport that is for sure. From what I understand Sony is doing EVERYTHING in their power to push Blue Ray. At first glance, it has considerable catching up to do. So giving away free movies seems to make sense. Until I hear otherwise, I am boycotting all blue ray technologies. It just does not make sense to me. I want one system or a hybrid. Not another Beta/VHS battle that the customers will lose with.

I'd be backing BlueRay before HD-DVD. BlueRay is forward thinking, whereas HD-DVD is more like an adaptation of current DVD. For the future, and where it can go, BlueRay has a lot more potential... not just a "we don't want to set up new manufacturing hardware to churn out movie disks".

I did not know that. I thought that Blue Ray was a spin off of the original Sony/Phillips collaboration that turned into CD. I thought that in fact Blue Ray has been around in it infancy since the advent of the CD. Neither format is really a breakthrough in technology. That is part of the dissappointment. I'd love both to fail and see a third universal format step in. That will never happen either.

I think any media on a round plastic disc (ie CD, DVD, HD-DVD, BluRay) is lousy technology. The more data they cram into the same surface area, the worse it is. It's so easy to damage your disc and lose the $15-$50 worth of data on it.

They need to use something more durable.
