the notebook arrived today FS570 1.7Ghz 1GB RAM!. Just power it up for 1hour and posted this message to you guys.

    1. just like usual, i have a habit to reinstall the OS, create 2-3 partition in the hard disk. this laptop is using windows xp home, so i must change it to pro.

    2. WHERE IS THE DISC?? i didn't see any cd software in the box, i need the VAIO software like VAIO launcher, VAIO media, etc.

    3. advertised as 100GB, but available space is 88GB (free space 81GB) is this normal?

    4. plan to change to 7200rpm hard disk very near in the future if i figure out how to replace hdd. this notebook is just too beautiful and too delicate to modify now :p

anyone can advise if i can download those software online?
    thanks,

    question re: partitioning laptop HDs...

is this a good idea? doesn't this make the HD work harder and slower?

    or am i nitpicking?

Partitioning into several drives...it's a personal preference, but I don't do it, I just keep it one big drive. There are advantages and disadvantages either way. To change it to pro, you will need to buy XP pro (very expensive) or uninstall it from another computer so it can be activated.
Most new notebooks don't come with any discs, What they do is create a hidden partition on the hard drive and put an image of the original system on it. That way if the OS gets messed up, you can restore the notebook to just the way it came to you when new. So there is no OS install disc, but some notebook makers put in a utility to create a restore disc or OS disc from the hidden partition. That answers question 3, 12GB is being used by the hidden partition to hold your restore image. You can probably find most if not all of the drivers for your notebook somewhere on Sony's website.

    Good luck

i just used this notebook for work and business. hasn't tried to play any games here. but i would assumed it'll play game fairly well, but won't do good on hardcore 3D. the videocard memory is shared!. if you are a gamer, choose the one with nvidia card with separate memory.

IMO partitioning is important. i usually put OS and MS software in C and other documents/applications on D. so just in case something wrong happened, your data is still in D and can just delete C.
