    Hi everyone,

I just have a few questions about this machine.

To me it seems like the light sensor for the keyboard is waaaay off, it keeps turning on and off at the moment, really stupid? anyway to control it??

Also the screen brightness at "full brightness" is so dim it seems like a joke, ?! I am missing something here or?

everything is setup up to max in windows and via the keyboard (ends up being the same thing).

hope someone can fill me in on why a $4000 AUD laptop gives away so little light.

There's an auto dim setting in the VAIO Control Center - Display - Automatic Brightness Settings. You'll definitely want to turn it off. Also see here for even more control over the brightness: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/497093-how-fix-dim-screen-vpc-z.html

Not sure about the keyboard sensor -- mine seems pretty smart about when to turn on and off. I suppose you could just cover it with a small piece of electrical tape if you want it on all the time (you can set it to turn off after a few seconds of inactivity).

Bad idea, the tape on the sensor trick works for keyboard backlight. When the sensor receive less light the computer understand "less light = darker environment" and reduce the maximum brightness level of the screen. (see what happened when you put your finger on the sensor)

Before the dim screen tweak you should try some things :

    - Do not use your Z backlight, your screen will look dim even at max brightness because the sensor is under your screen's shadow and your eyes are not.
    - Try modifying the max brightness set in your win7 power management profile (win7 taskbar>windows battery icon>adjust brightness>modify parameters for the profile your using> adjust the max brightness level by moving the button)

For the dim screen, if you have the Auto-dimming enabled, you cant manually control the screen brightness (so do what blahman said to turn off the auto-dimming)

this thread from Beaups: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/497093-how-fix-dim-screen-vpc-z.html shows how you can make the "max" brightness brighter(sony didnt unlock the full potential of the screen, also, it you put the value of the 1st little tabby thing on the fn+F5 to 0, it turns off your screen's backlight completely =).

As for your keyboard... there's no way to change the sensitivity, i just give up and place something small(usually a post-it sticker) over it when it want it to stay lit in semi-bright conditions... that's the only known "fix" for that.

Thanks a lot guys, sounds a bit gay about the keyboard, but wow the computer is fast!!! I'll do a reformat of it tonight, get rid of Sony stuff and setup partitions on the sdds. Anything different from the normal hdds when it comes to installing windows? Thanks. So unlucky I got really sick today, so getting up to do stuff is a bit harder than normally.

I guess ill just follow the guide eventually, but yes it seems i can get away with just uninstalling the stuff I don't want at the moment and updating graphics drivers and like for now.

Thanks a lot of the screen tips! It went from 33% to 100% and BAM! all of a sudden a beautiful screen! :D love the 1080p !!!
